Run Line: Minnesota Twins -1.5
The Toronto Blue Jays have gotten off to a terrible start and look like they are heading for a rebuild after being bad last season. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is still in triple-A even though the deadline has passed and they have a seventh season control so he could be called up soon. Toronto’s pitching has been one of the few bright spots of the season for them as they sit seventh in ERA with 3.41 per game and have the third most strikeouts with 161. The Blue Jays need to fix the back of their bullpen problem having blown two of their six save opportunities. Toronto has been awful at the plate however ranking 26th in on-base percentage at just .283 and has a team batting average at .203 on the year. Toronto’s pitching staff has relied on their strikeouts as they are third in the majors with 161 and is averaging 10.16 strikeouts per 9 innings.
The Minnesota Twins swept the two-game series against the Detroit Tigers after splitting a pair with the New York Mets. The Twins are 7-3 in their last ten games and currently leads the AL Central. The Twins have done this without Miguel Sano who is still a month away from coming back from a foot injury that has caused him to miss the start of the year. For Minnesota Martin Perez will make his season debut as a starter after making three appearances in long relief that has seen him go 8 1/3 innings and allowed 7 earned runs. Minnesota has relied on their offense with their team sitting in third in batting average at .279 and is sitting in seventh in on base percentage at .347 in their first 12 games.
These teams are going in two different directions with the Twins having gotten off to a great start and the Blue Jays looking like the best their season is going to be is when they bring in their young players from the minors. Each of these teams has struggled to score runs and rank in the bottom half of runs scored and rank in the bottom ten teams in home runs hit. This game should be low scoring and should see the Twins bullpen to get work when Perez struggles. The Jays has won just one of their last four but needs to get back on the right track. They have struggled on the road as they have gone 1-5 away from home this year butt Shoemaker has been great as he has gone at least 5 2/3 innings and has only allowed two runs in three starts including back to back starts where he hasn’t allowed a run. The Blue Jays despite being injury ravaged are a really good value here especially with Perez not having a good start to the year and the Jays should do enough to get a rare win on the road.
