The Washington Nationals (32-24) have lost the first two games in this series and are looking to turn things around. This series snapped a span of eight wins in nine games prior to these losses. The Nationals pitching staff has been phenomenal, ranking second in the league in earned run average, WHIP, and opponent batting average. Gio Gonzalez (6-2, 2.10 ERA) will start against Atlanta on Saturday. Gonzalez has been excellent this year, giving up more than two runs on only one occasion in 11 starts. In four starts against Atlanta last year, Gonzalez had a 5.32 earned run average and a 1-2 record. That was the third highest ERA of any of Gonzalez’s opponents.

The Atlanta Braves (34-23) have been one of the MLB’s breakout teams and currently sit atop the National League East standings. The Braves’ success has been heavily because of their tremendous early-season offensive performance. Atlanta ranks in the top five in the league in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and runs. The Braves will send Brandon McCarthy (5-2, 5.02 ERA) to the mound on Saturday. McCarthy struggled in his last start, giving up five runs in 5.1 innings of work against the Mets. In one start against the Nationals this year, McCarthy went five innings and gave up four hits and only one run in a winning effort.
