The Washington Nationals will send out Stephen Strasburg to try to win Washington’s fifth consecutive game and try to close the gap to second in the NL East further. Strasburg hasn’t been his usual dominate self and lost his last time out only going 5 2/3 and allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts. Strasburg enters Wednesday night’s game with a 1-0 record against Philadelphia with a 6.30 ERA and allowing seven runs in the two games pitched this season. The Nationals have had a disappointing season but still have Juan Soto as the future of the franchise and could potentially be the NL rookie of the year and added to his case with a four RBI game as well as hitting the game-winning homer.
The Philadelphia Phillies are continuing to attempt to climb back into the NL East race trailing the Atlanta Braves by six games. They will send Aaron Nola to the mound who is in the midst of a career year and leads the NL in win percentage and second in ERA in addition to leading in WAR for pitchers and is arguably the favorite for the CY Young or maybe even an outside shot at MVP. After losing both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday the Phillies will look to take the third and final game as they are in the midst of six straight series against NL East competition as they have already dropped the first three series and is just 6-16 in their last twenty-two games and lost four consecutive games. Philadelphia is just 21-28 in the second half of the season and has a 15-22 since August began.

Both of these teams still have games against the Braves remaining with a chance to still make up ground although either finding their way to the division crown unlikely. The Phillies need to start winning now and still hope the Braves continue to struggle in the second half of the year if they are to get to the postseason. Strasburg has been a better pitcher on the road with a 5-2 record 2.42 ERA while Nola is 9-1 with a 2.21 ERA and has been the Phillies best pitcher this year. Nola will need to have a great start and after playing a doubleheader both teams will need to have their starters go deep into the game but Strasburg has managed to go through six innings in just three of his last eight starts. The Phillies can’t afford a sweep here and Nola will ensure they don’t fall into their worst losing streak of the year.
