ESPN NBA Picks Charlotte Hornets vs Indiana Pacers

Hornets: The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 129-120 to improve to 27-28 in their last outing. Previously, they had lost two straight and had fallen below .500, so getting this win was important for their confidence. Also it was important for their confidence in themselves to play without their veteran backup point guard, Tony Parker. Before Saturday, they were 0-8 in games without Parker. Kemba Walker scored 37 to bring his season total of 30 point games to 17. A hostile environment plus missing pieces could have led to the upset in Atlanta.  As the best player on the floor, Walker knew he had the responsibility to take control of this game. But he was not alone in this game. F Marvin Williams had a season high 27 points on 12 of 16 shooting from the field. G Jeremy Lamb also added 24 points and four 3-pointers as well. Charlotte scored 46 points in the opening frame. That set the tone for one of their best offensive nights of the season. Kemba Walker is having an all star season and was rewarded with a starting spot in the game, which will be held in Charlotte. Great recognition to a player who has not had much team success or talent for that matter, yet still has had some personal success making him one of the best guards in the game today.

Pacers: The Indiana Pacers are winners of 5 straight games. Their last game against the Cleveland Cavaliers saw them take the victory 105-90. It was a dominant performance for Indiana. After taking the lead, 4-2 off a Myles Turner dunk, the Pacers never let it go, as they were dead set on taking this revenge game after Cleveland ended their 7-game win streak earlier in the season. They will continue to play without star Victor Oladipo, who is out for the season with a ruptured quad. What is interesting about that is that the injury has not slowed Indiana’s momentum this season, as they continue to be one of the surprise teams this season as they sit near the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Coach Nate McMillan deserves a brunt of the credit for that. It would be easy for a team to begin to crumble when they lose a player that carries a big load of the scoring and ball handling. But Indiana has showed no signs of slowing it down. They have grabbed some recent headlines as the team that delivered LeBron James his biggest defeat in his career, which spans over 16 seasons. That is a great feat mad sweeter by the fact that James eliminated them last season in a wildly-competitive 7-game series in the opening round.

ESPN NBA Scores Indiana Pacers vs Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte will play inspired basketball after the way their last matchup with Indiana went. The Pacers won by 25 points, but that game was played with Victor Oladipo in the lineup. Charlotte has to be thinkin about that and will look to take advantage. But I actually think the injury of Tony Parker will be the more significant one. Indiana has some huge wins at home, and look focused on the task of continuing to prove their doubters wrong. You probably have to be playing good, quality basketball to throw them right now. Charlotte’s 9-point win against the lowly Hawks, while an important confidence boost, isn’t impressive enough to say they are rolling. I think Indiana continues to roll right over Charlotte.

Pick: Indiana (-5)
