The Chicago Bulls have fell on hard times, losing 5 of their last 6 games. Most recently, the Bulls lost to the Dallas Mavericks, 110-118. The New Orleans Pelicans in the other hand, have been playing lights out, going 5-2 in their last 7 games. They’re anticipating the debut of the highly touted Zion Williamson, the first overall pick of the 2019 Draft. He recently started 5-on-5’s and will probably play next week, if not this week. They’ve been winning games, but need Williamson explosiveness if they hope to make the playoffs this year. The Pelicans most recently lost to the Utah Jazz, 126-128. Tonight, the Bulls will visit the Pelicans. The two teams met twice last year, the Pelicans winning both games.

The Bulls looked promising in the beginning of the season. But now they’re looking more and more like the inexperienced, sloppy team of last year. The game against the Mavericks was no exception to the rule. Only two Bulls players scored 20 or more points. Lauri Markkanen scored 26, and nearly tallied a double-double with 9 rebounds. Leading scorer Zach LaVine scored 20. But the Bulls simply didn’t fight enough. They went 29% from beyond the arc and nearly fouled twice as much as their opponent (Mavericks went 73% from the charity stripe). The Bulls rank the worst in TO differential and often get out rebounded. The Bulls may have addressed their PG problem, but now they need a strong presence inside. They need more out of injury-ridden Wendell Carter Jr., and more efficiency out of Zach LaVine.

Zion Williamson has always been the buzz surrounding this Pelicans season. And they’ve struggled without him. But last night, the Pelicans were playing at max potential, and showed an intriguing preview to the possibilities of their future. Brandon Ingram recorded the impressive stat line of 35-8-5 and scored 3-6 from three pointer. And Lonzo Ball scored 20+ in his fourth consecutive game. Their main concern over the last few weeks has been the 4 and 5 spot, rookie Jaxson Hayes has been serviceable inside, but Williamson seems like the type of player that will not only light up inside scoring and defense, but rally the entire team around him. They need him now, but to win tonight, they’ll need to match the Bulls’ size, but play bigger, play more aggressive.

Whenever the Pelicans start heating up, the opponents need to watch out. But even teams tanking finds ways to win, especially to end long droughts. Nevertheless, I see the Pelicans winning, the spread just seems to much in their favor in this one, and their players match up well, especially defensively.
