The last time these two teams played each other, the Los Angeles Lakers walked away with a 119-110 overtime win in both teams' fifth game of the season. Both LeBron James (39 points, 16 assists, and 12 rebounds) and Luka Doncic (31 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds) finished the game with triple-doubles. Anthony Davis had 31 points and 8 rebounds for the Lakers and Kristaps Porzingis had 16 points and 9 rebounds for the Mavericks.
The Lakers shot better from the field than the Mavs 49%-39% while the Mavericks shot better from three-point range 39%-28%. The Mavericks outrebounded the Lakers 61-41 dominating the offensive glass grabbing 18 offensive rebounds to the Lakers six offensive rebounds.
It was the Lakers ability to force turnovers that was key in them getting the win as the Mavericks committed 22 turnovers in the game with the Lakers forcing 11 steals in the game while the Lakers committed just 11 turnovers in the game. Also, the Lakers finished the game with seven blocks (Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard combined for five blocks) compared to the Mavericks one block in the game.
The Lakers have continued to be among the best defensive teams as they are third best in the league in points allowed per game (103.5) and fourth best in field goal percentage allowed (37.8%). They lead the league in blocks per game (7.5) and are sixth in steals per game (8.5). Their offense has played well also as they are in the top 10 in points per game (112.8). They lead the league in field goal percentage (48%), 12th in three-point percentage (36%) and are fourth in assists per game (26.6).
It has not been smooth sailing for the Lakers, however, as they have been among the bottom of the league in a number of key categories. Free throw shooting has been a struggle for the Lakers as they are in the bottom half of the league in makes (16.2), attempts (21.8) and percentage (74%). They are also in the bottom half of the league in each rebounding category as they are 17th in defensive rebounds, 19th in total rebounds and 22nd in offensive rebounds. The Lakers ability to make free throws and controlling the boards will be key to them getting the win over the Mavericks.
The Mavericks, on the other hand, have been a strong rebounding team this season. They are fifth in total rebounds per game (47.6), seventh in defensive rebounds (36.8) and tenth in offensive rebounds (10.7). They are fourth in points per game (118) and lead the league in turnovers per game (13.2) even though turnovers were the downfall of the Mavericks in their last meeting with the Lakers. They are third in free throws made and attempted (20.4 and 26.4 respectively) though they are 14th in free throw percentage (78%).
As far as the defensive end for the Mavericks, there is work that needs to be done. The Mavs are in the bottom half of the league in points allowed per game (110.3), field goals made and allowed per game (41.4 and 91.9 respectively), and turnovers forced per game (12.7). They are also in the bottom half of the league in rebounds allowed per game (46) and offensive rebounds allowed per game (11.4). The key for the Mavericks to get a win over the Lakers is consistency on the offensive end and tightening up their play on the defensive end.
