Coach Rick Carlisle is poised to lead the Dallas Mavericks to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The Mavericks have an record of 39-26 on the year. If the season ended today, Dallas would be the 7th seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They are 1 game behind the division-leading Houston Rockets in the Southwest Division. The Mavericks are in prime position to make the postseason because they are 6.5 games ahead of the 8th-place Memphis Grizzlies and 10.5 games ahead of the 9th-place New Orleans Pelicans. It remains to be seen if Dallas can win a playoff series, which they have been unable to do since they won the championship in 2011.

Dallas ranks 6th in net rating, outscoring their opponents by 6.1 points per 100 possessions. The driving force behind Dallas' strong season is their prolific offense. The Mavericks are 1st in offensive rating, scoring 116.8 points per 100 possessions. They rank 4th in effective field goal percentage (54.8%) and 3rd in offensive turnover percentage (11.3%). Defensively, Dallas is pretty average. The Mavericks are 17th in defensive rating, allowing 110.7 points per 100 possessions. They rank 9th in defensive effective field goal percentage and 6th in free throw attempts allowed per 100 possessions. However, they rank 30th in defensive turnover percentage (10.6%) and field goal attempts allowed per 100 possessions.

The best player for the Dallas Mavericks is Luka Doncic. The 21-year old guard averages 28.5 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game. He is 6th in the NBA in scoring, 4th in assists, and 18th in rebounds. Doncic ranks 4th in Player Efficiency Rating, 12th in Win Shares, 6th in Box Plus/Minus, and 7th in Value Over Replacement Player. Unfortunately for Dallas, Doncic is questionable for this game with a wrist injury. Luka is one of many players who are either out or questionable. Dwight Powell, Jalen Brunson, Michael Kidd-Gilchrest, Willie Cauley-Stein, and Seth Curry are all out with injury. Dorian Finney-Smith is questionable with a hip injury. This means that the load will fall on Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr., if Luka doesn't play. Porzingis averages 19.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Tim Hardaway Jr. averages 15.8 points per game, while hitting 40.8% of his 3-point attempts.

San Antonio

The San Antonio Spurs are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. San Antonio has an overall record of 26-36. They are 5 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the 8th spot in the Western Conference standings. The Spurs are also behind the #9 New Orleans Pelicans, #10 Sacramento Kings and #11 Portland Trail Blazers. They have really struggled away from San Antonio, going 11-22 on the road. However, they have been more competitive at home. They are 15-14 at home this season. Spurs fans are hopeful that the home-court advantage will help San Antonio beat their in-state rival in this contest.

San Antonio ranks 20th in net rating, getting outscored by their opponents by 1.9 points per 100 possessions. Despite their poor net rating, Gregg Popovich's offense is above average. The Spurs rank 11th in offensive rating, scoring 111.8 points per 100 possessions. San Antonio is #1 in the NBA in terms of offensive turnover percentage. The Spurs turn the ball over on just 11.0% of their offensive plays. They rank 2nd in free throw percentage, hitting 80.9% of their free throws attempted. However, they are an average shooting team from the floor and a poor offensive rebounding team. San Antonio ranks 21st in effective field goal percentage and 29th in offensive rebounding percentage. While San Antonio's offense has been pretty good, it's the Spurs' defense that has been uncharacteristically lagging. San Antonio is 26th in defensive rating, allowing 113.7 per 100 possessions. They are stronger rebounding on the defensive end than the offensive, ranking 4th in defensive rebounding percentage. The Spurs' defensive numbers are so unimpressive because they rank 24th in defensive effective field goal percentage and 26th in defensive turnover percentage.

DeMar DeRozan is their leader on offense, averaging 22.3 points per game. The veteran guard ranks 19th in the NBA in scoring. He also averages 5.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, this season. DeRozan is one of the main reasons their free throw percentage is so high. He averages 6.6 free throw attempts per game, and makes 84.4% of them. LaMarcus Aldridge is their 2nd leading scorer and best rebounder. He averages 18.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Aldridge is listed as probable (shoulder injury), so it's likely the Spurs will have him in the lineup. Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl are both out with injuries. Lonnie Walker is questionable with a shin injury. Even if Aldridge plays, it will be important for guys like Bryn Forbes, Derrick White, Patty Mills, and Rudy Gay to step up with so many Spurs on the injury report.
