In tonight’s Eastern Conference match up, the 8th seeded Pistons head to Boston to take on the 4th seeded Celtics. Detroit looks to make it five in a row, while Boston looks to build off their solid win against Philly.
Despite various sources that the Celtics have significant chemistry issues, the team is 7-3 in their last ten. They’re 26-10 against the East and 22-8 at the TD Garden. They’re coming off a much needed win against the 76ers after blowing a 20 point lead against the Clippers and losing at the buzzer against the Lakers, which should give them some positive momentum tonight.
The main concerns for the Celtics is that they’re without Kyrie Irving tonight, and back ups Terry Rozier and Aron Baynes are also out. Without Irving and Rozier, the brunt of the work at the point will likely fall to Marcus Smart, and rookie Brad Wanamaker may see some minutes if needed. Aron Baynes is a significant loss against a Pistons frontcourt that features Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin. Compared to Drummond, Al Horford and Marcus Morris are undersized, but if they can keep him off the glass as much as possible, they should be in a good spot tonight.
The main thing to watch out for tonight is whether or not Gordon Hayward can repeat his play from last night, as he was easily the difference maker in their three point victory. Hayward has been wildly inconsistent this year, but he put up 26 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists and was 6/7 from three. If Hayward continues to play like he’s worth his nearly $128mm contract, the Celtics will be in great shape for both this game and the rest of the season.
The Pistons are finally in the playoff race after winning their last four games. They’re currently one game below .500 against the East, and 9-16 on the road, which may be some cause for concern tonight. Nonetheless, against a Celtics team that is banking on Hayward having a good game twice in a row, Detroit should be optimistic.
For the Pistons to win, or at least cover the spread, Griffin, Drummond, and Reggie Jackson simply need to keep up their solid play. Over the least ten, Griffin is putting up 27 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. Drummond is averaging 23 points, 15.5 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.8 steals on a ridiculous 67.9% recently as well, which should pose a nightmare match up for Al Horford. Furthermore, Jackson is performing well over his last ten as well, putting up 17.6 points and 5.8 assists. If the three of them play like they have been, and they can get some solid shooting performances from the likes of Luke Kennard and Wayne Ellington, the Pistons have a great chance at victory tonight.

ESPN NBA Scores Boston Celtics Vs Detroit Pistons
Without Kyrie Irving, the Celtics will rely heavily on Horford, Tatum, and Hayward to perform tonight. I’m not convinced that Hayward will repeat his performance from yesterday tonight. Additionally, Horford will have a difficult match up in Andre Drummond, especially without Aron Baynes to back him up. Overall, I’m taking the Pistons to win or at the very least cover the spread tonight.
Pick: Detroit Pistons (+4)
