In tonight’s Eastern Conference showdown, the Pistons head to South Beach to take on the Heat. Both teams dropped their last game and both will be looking to bounce back tonight.
Despite their sub .500 record, the Heat presently sit at the 8th seed in the East. They’re 5-5 in their last ten, however they’ve fared poorly against Eastern Conference foes and at home. Miami is just 18-22 against the East, and 15-19 at home. The only other teams in the conference with a below .500 record at home are the Hawks, Bulls, Cavs, and Knicks, none of whom are remotely close to the playoff race. Nonetheless, the Heat are a well-coached team with Eric Spoelstra at the helm. Their solid understanding of team basketball makes them a difficult opponent for any foe.
Prior to losing by 21 to the Raptors a few nights ago, the Heat were on a four game win streak. Miami will be potentially be without Josh Richardson tonight, who is questionable with a hamstring injury. Even without Richardson, the Heat have several players posting solid stat lines over their last ten, who should make a big impact tonight.
Dwyane Wade has been excellent from the bench, posting 15.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists over his last ten. Even with his 1 point, 0-8 from the field outing against the Raptors, Kelly Olynyk has been great, averaging 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his last ten. Justice Winslow is putting up 13.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.6 assists, and he’s been excellent as the team’s main distributor.
Furthermore, the tandem of Bam Adebayo and Hassan Whiteside have been great splitting minutes at the center spot. Adebayo is averaging 10.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists in just under 24 minutes per game, while Whiteside is posting 12.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in just 22.1 minutes per contest.
The Pistons are 8-2 in their last ten and 24-20 against the East, however their 13-19 road record may create some cause for concern. Detroit won five straight before being blown out by 28 points on Monday against the Nets. Blake Griffin and Reggie Jackson struggled shooting the ball in that game, going 1-10 and 3-8 respectively. Andre Drummond also shot just 5-14, however he still managed 13 points and 20 rebounds (9 offensive). In fact, the whole team had an off night, going just 27-97 (27.8%) from the field and 8-34 (23.5%) from three.
The keys for the Pistons tonight are to make shots. Drummond has been a monster lately, averaging 18.2 points and 16.9 rebounds over his last ten. Reggie Jackson is putting up 17.8 points per game, and while Blake Griffin’s scoring numbers are down a bit, he’s distributing well and deferring to his teammates. All three of Luke Kennard, Wayne Ellington and Langston Galloway have been great with their perimeter shooting lately as well. Despite having an off night last game, if they can continue to space the floor like they have, the Pistons are in a good spot tonight.

ESPN NBA Scores Miami Heat Vs Detroit Pistons
The Pistons are a more talented team than the Heat, especially if Josh Richardson doesn’t suit up for Miami tonight, and the spread they have to cover is rather small. I’m not convinced that the Pistons will shoot the ball as poorly as they did against the Nets. Andre Drummond should give Adebayo and Whiteside a hard time, and I see Blake Griffin showing out tonight after his abysmal 1-10 shooting night on Monday.
Pick: Detroit Pistons (-1.5)
