The Detroit Pistons take on the Sacramento Kings in a Thursday night matchup. While neither team is playing above .500 basketball, the Kings are a much more optimistic bunch as despite their lackluster record, they have far exceeded most expectations thus far.
The Pistons were supposed to be better this season. Bolstered by the hiring of Coach of the Year Dwayne Casey, the Pistons had high hopes for their team so long as Blake Griffin could stay on the court. Griffin has been able to stay on the court, but the Pistons have not seen the results that the front office was expecting when putting together this team. Despite the elite rebounding of Andre Drummond, scoring punch of Blake Griffin, and solid all-around play from Reggie Jackson; the Pistons find themselves being overmatched on a near nightly basis.
The Pistons actually play solid defense, ranking in the middle of the pack for team defensive rating. Where the Pistons struggle is on the offensive side of the ball. With minimal depth, when Griffin goes off the court, the Pistons lose just about all of their scoring ability. Outside of Griffin, the Pistons have just 3 other players who even average double digit points per game. The team is too heavily reliant on Griffin at the moment and the results are beginning to show for themselves.
Despite a sub .500 record, there is plenty of reason for optimism among Sacramento Kings fans. Most experts predicted the Kings to finish at the bottom of the Western Conference when instead, they find themselves in a dog fight for the 8th and final playoff spot in the West. Although the improved play from the King’s arsenal of young bigs has been important, the evolution of De’Aaron Fox has taken this team to the next level.
Upping his scoring to 18 points per game to go with 7.3 assists, Fox has taken the next step and turned himself into a true offensive weapon. One of the most athletic players in recent memory, Fox runs circles around the opposing defense and has shown an increased ability to read an NBA defense. A quick learner and hard worker, there is reason to believe that there is even more room to grow for De’Aaron Fox. If the Kings can keep this young core together, they will undoubtedly be one of the more dangerous teams for years to come.

The Pistons are coming off a back to back in which they dropped the first game to the Lakers. On the road again, the schedule does the Pistons no favors. Meanwhile, the Kings are coming off a frustrating loss to the Suns and will be looking to get back on track at home where they have been rock solid. Both teams will be looking for a much needed win so look for this one to stay close throughout. Expect the young Kings to pull away late against a tired Pistons squad and do JUST enough to cover the spread.
