Houston is coming off of a blowout of the Shanghai Sharks on Tuesday, and if that game is any small indication, they are ready for the real games to start. This Houston team is loaded with veterans and are solidly in win-now mode. They lost Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute in the offseason. And while those two will be missed, they did pick up Carmelo Anthony and Marquese Chriss. Anthony’s story is well-known, and the question is if he can accept his role as a role player rather than a superstar on a contending team. That remains to be seen. Chriss is a fascinating young player, because he has all the athleticism in the world, but he has not yet put it together to become a good NBA player. He still has time to figure it out though.

Anything less than a western conference finals trip for this team would be a disaster. Barring injury, this is the second-best team in a loaded western conference, and they very well could have defeated the Golden State Warriors last May. If anyone can dethrone the Warriors in the west this season, it’ll be the Houston Rockets.

Memphis is a team that was ravaged by injuries last season, and was able to get the #4 overall pick in the draft and select Jaren Jackson Jr. Jackson could very well be the best big man to come out of his draft class if he lives up to his potential. Memphis has Mike Conley coming back from injury, and Marc Gasol is still alive and well. They signed former Spurs forward Kyle Anderson, but in their preseason loss to the Magic, he did not look so hot.

This team has a postseason pedigree, and is looking to get back to their winning ways pretty quickly. It will be hard for them to do in the loaded western conference, seeing as they might not have the talent to compete on a nightly basis. They could be in for another lottery pick in 2019 without the injuries hitting them. Which could also be in their best interests, seeing as their pick would go to the Celtics if it is outside of the top 8 selections.

The Rockets have the much deeper bench of these two teams, and if the starters don’t play at all, the scoreboard will be very lopsided in the Rockets’ favor.

Pick: Rockets (Unless the line is better for the Grizzles)
