The Los Angeles Clippers will host the Detroit Pistons Saturday afternoon with Blake Griffin set to play his former team and make his return as a visiting player to the familiar confines of Staples Center. Griffin had some great years as a Clipper, but now Griffin (25.1 ppg 8.3 rpg 5.3 apg) and Andre Drummond (16.7 ppg 14.9 rpg 1.3 apg) form one of the best front court tandems in the league. But, the Pistons have had inconsistent contributions at the guard positions, which is what would be expected when Reggie Jackson (14.8 ppg 2.7 rpg 4.2 apg) is probably their best guard. The talent of Griffin and Drummond still have the Pistons in the playoff hunt, only two games out of the 8th seed, and 9th in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons have not been playing well lately and are 2-8 in their last 10 games. The Clippers are 6-4 in their last 10 games.
The Pistons are coming off a Thursday night road loss to the Sacramento Kings, 112-102. Griffin did not play in the game and Stanley Johnson lead them in scoring with 16 points off the bench. The Clippers are coming off a Thursday night road loss to the Denver Nuggets 121-100, with Louis Williams leading them in scoring with 19 off the bench. If the Pistons don’t make a trade to get some more playmakers, then they could miss the playoffs, despite having Griffin and Drummond and paying them max dollars. This is not what the Pistons would’ve expected playing in the weaker conference.
The Clippers will really want to get this one in order to stay afloat in the tight Western Conference playoff hunt, currently seeded 5th. The rookie, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (9.9 ppg 2.9 rpg 2.9 apg) could play a key role in this game defensively, if he is able to disrupt the Pistons guards at the point of attack. The Pistons average 15.2 turnovers per game while the Clippers average 14.8. The Pistons are ranked 15th in points allowed at 109.82 ppg, but the Clippers are even worse allowing 114.29 ppg. Offensively, the Clippers average 115.59 ppg, while the Pistons average 106.88 ppg. The Clippers have the more efficient offense and are going against an average defense. This could turn into a track meet, as the Clippers can’t really stop teams and instead speed the game up to create more possessions for their starless team. Doc Rivers has done a great job of establishing a team identity and has formed these seemingly mismatched pieces into one of the best offensive teams in basketball.

The trade of Blake Griffin has worked out decently for the Clippers as they got back Tobias Harris, (21.0 ppg 8.0 rpg 2.2 apg) Avery Bradley, (7.5 ppg 2.4 rpg 1.9 apg) Boban Marjanovic (6.9 ppg 4.3 rpg 0.6 apg) and a future first and second round pick. One of those picks from Detroit, they used in this past draft to take Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who looks to be a promising player on both ends of the court. With those quality contributors, the Clippers did a great job with the trade and are now a better team for it. For the Clippers, Luc Mbah a Moute is out and Milos Teodosic is listed as questionable. For the Pistons, Henry Ellenson and Zaza Pachulia are out and Ish Smith is listed as questionable. Take the over for 221 and a Clippers win.
