We are more than halfway through the NBA season and there are no sure things. T-Wolves host the Clippers as they look to ease some of the pressure on themselves by closing in on the Clippers in the West standings. Both teams may not feature in the playoffs come post-season but this match up sure seems like a competitive match on the paper.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers have had themselves a competitive season. Not many would have predicted them to be above the Lakers and the Wolves at this point of the season in a deep western conference. They started the season well, holding on to the number 1 seed for a significant amount of time and have continued to drop down since as most of the teams in West have grown accustomed to the new challenges that Western Conference bought this year.

Danilo Gallinari is putting up 19 points and grabbing 6 rebounds while Lou Williams is putting up another sixth man of the year campaign averaging 18.8 points off the bench. The Clippers have a deep team with Gortat, Beverly, and Luc Mbah a Moute giving them enough rotation and productivity for them to not miss the Superstar signing they have been clamoring for.

Recent trade of Tobias Harris was seen as a move to rebuild around cap space and draft assets that may help them lure a couple of superstars to the top team in LA during the offseason but the Clippers impressed in their last game as they comprehensively defeated the Celtics with 8 players scoring in double figures.

It remains to be seen whether or not they’ll still have a playoff seed come the end of the regular season, but they have been competitive against odds all season and will look to give all the teams in the lower half of playoff position in the west a run for their money.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Timberwolves are right now tied for the worst losing streak in the association for the teams not named New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns. They have won 0 games in February and lost 4 to teams that they should be beating if they still seriously consider themselves playoff contenders. After losing a close game to Pelicans on Saturday, the Timberwolves are feeling the pressure as they see their contention turn into comedy.

Karl Anthony Towns is having a good season and got named as a Western Conference reserve for the All Star Game and Andrew Wiggins has averaged 19.7 points ever since Jimmy Butler was traded.

Before breaking down the match up, it is essential to realise that statistics can be misleading in this match up. The Timberwolves have struggled to get going all season long, ranking in the bottom Half in both offensive rating(109.2/15th in the league) and defensive rating(109.4/17th in the league) but they are a far superior team on both ends of the floor than their upcoming opponents who are in a rebuild mode.

The T-Wolves rank 11th in Pace which has become an important feature to cover up the lack of shooting that the team represents. Wolves rely heavily on Jeff Teague to be their primary playmaker who is 11th in league in Assist%(35.7), so losing him to an ankle injury is a big blow to their offence.

T-Wolves rank 4th in league with 9 steals per game and they have done a remarkable job of restricting easy buckets from the opposition ranking 8th in the opposition points in paints and 5th in the opponents points off of turnovers. Their hustle has been an important feature as they have stacked 15.2 second chance points(5th in the league).

The T-Wolves may face an injury crisis of sorts as Teague(foot), Bayless(Toe), Tyus Jones(Ankle) and Wiggins(illness) remain game time decisions while Robert Covington has already been ruled out due to an Ankle issue.

Timberwolves have struggled of late but ever since trading Avery Bradely and Tobias Harris, people are expecting the same from the Clippers. Despite the trades, the Clippers remain deep and competitive. However, the sample size is too small to predict anything and with the T-Wolves looking to bounce back after enduring a tough start to the month, the match up promises to be a good one.

A lot will depend on how thin the Wolves are come the game time but a bounceback win should be expected from them especially since they will look to cease their losing streak before the All Star Break.

Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves -4
