The Pelicans are coming off of a hard earned, double-overtime win on Saturday night against the Brooklyn Nets. They hope to add to the Pistons losing streak in an easier manner on Monday night.

The Pelicans last win did not come easily, a 20-point halftime lead quickly vanished, but the team still escaped Brooklyn with a 138-128 win. Anthony Davis put the team on his back with 44 points, 17 rebounds, six steals and three blocks, all while playing an astounding 49 minutes. The Pelicans are fighting for a lower-seed in the western conference playoff picture and have dropped games against teams fighting for a playoff spot similar to them. The team dropped games to the Timberwolves, Jazz and 76ers before snapping their skid against the Nets. Nikola Mirotic has made an immediate impact on the Pelicans since being acquired from the Bulls at the trade deadline. In four games with New Orleans, Mirotic is averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds and dropped 21 points with 16 rebounds in Saturday nights win. A win tonight for the Pelicans would sweep the season series against the Pistons, winning the first matchup 112-109 back on January 8th, in New Orleans. Anthony Davis will look for a similar performance in this game, he dropped 30 points in three quarters in last meeting with the Pistons before leaving the game with an ankle injury.

The Pistons are coming off an ugly loss to the Atlanta Hawks Saturday night, a team destined for the lottery. The 118-115 loss was the Pistons second straight game they’ve dropped, this coming after a five-game winning streak. Griffin contributed 23 points in the losing effort, but struggled shooting from the field, connecting on just 7 of his 21 shots. Point guard Jameer Nelson and small forward James Ennis III made their team debuts last game. Nelson tallied six points and five assists in 18 minutes of action while Ennis III posted 14 points, four rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes. While Nelson saw a good amount of playing time, both these guys can be expected to play a role in the Pistons moving forward as the team looks to make a push for the playoffs.

FREE NBA Pick New Orleans Pelicans vs. Detroit Pistons

The New Orleans Pelicans had a big loss when DeMarcus Cousins went down for the season. Anthony Davis is good enough to carry the team, but the Pistons are more well rounded and have more than just one option to go to on offense. Pistons get back on track with a win tonight against the Pelicans.

#Pistons can't guard Dinwiddie and LeVert ... guess Bullock and Johnson being out is an issue? #Pistons trying to survive opening night, leading by one with 3:22 remaining.

Reggie with a deep 3 and #Pistons lucky to be down only 4 with 4:58 remaining in 1st. #Nets up, 15-11.

Allen just stoned Griffin ...just like preseason. #Pistons.

#Pistons down 8-0 with 3 turnovers. TO from Dwane Casey.

Five things (#Pelicans open 2018-19 in resounding fashion, posting 19-point win at Houston; postgame video reaction from Davis, Mirotic, Payton, Gentry; home opener Friday vs. Kings; Gentry weekly radio show at 6:30 tonight): https://t.co/TbIj8ljKzc

One emphasis this season, or at least an area where #Pelicans can improve upon last season, could be to bring this type of intensity constantly. If they play like this, even if they have nights where they aren't shooting well, they'll be better at home and vs. lower-tier foes

Anthony Davis on the feeling of seeing #Pelicans big-man trio of he, Mirotic and Randle flourish in opening win at Houston: "It felt amazing. The way Niko was able to shoot the ball. Julius was able to push and rebound, get in the paint and dominate."

Nikola Mirotic, what did you like about Elfrid Payton’s 10-10-10 #Pelicans debut? “Everything. He really set a tone, especially defensively. We are just blessed to have him here. I think this is going to give him a lot of confidence. He’s adjusting very fast (to a new team).”

#Pelicans coaches and players predictably and understandably trying to downplay the significance of win in Houston because it’s only one game. But there’s no way this doesn’t add to the confidence that this team already had. Rockets did not even make a serious run on their floor
