Aaron Gordon’s late three-pointer sealed the Orlando Magic‘s win over the Sacramento Kings two days ago. Now they’re heading into LA to battle the Los Angeles Lakers. The Magic is hot right now, but not nearly as hot as the Lakers, they’ve won ten games straight with no signs of stopping. They last met in December, Lakers won that game, 96-87. Now the game series comes to SoCal where the Lakers thrive, and the Magic has been struggling to win on the road (6-13 road record this year). The Lakers most recently beat the Cavaliers.
The Orlando Magic currently sit at the 7 spot in the East, just half a game in front of the Nets and 5 games ahead of the Hornets, Bulls and Pistons. The Magic might make the playoffs again if they can keep winning like they did on Monday against the Kings. After a solid first half, the Magic slipped in the 3rd quarter, getting outscored 21-33. But Aaron Gordon understood what it took to lift them ahead in the end. He scored 19 with 9 boards and a block. The Kings were orbiting Nikola Vucevic in the free agency last year, and he really showed why they should’ve pursued him harder; he scored 26 with 15 boards and 3 blocks. The Magic played a clean game and capitalized on the charity stripe and that’s what led to the win.
It’s no secret the Magic struggle on offense. They’re last in the NBA in scoring, among the worst in FG% and 3P%. They own time of possession, and play at their own pace, and that’s why they can win games– and lead the NBA in fewest turnovers and opponent scoring. Now they just need Jonathan Isaac back ASAP.
The Lakers, too, have been missing a key piece of their team, Anthony Davis, who’s out with a glute injury. But LeBron and the Lakers still keep rolling over competition. The Cavalier were their latest victims. LeBron James dazzled yet again with an impressive stat line 31-2-8. But it was Dwight Howard‘s night against the Cavs. He scored 21 points off the bench and went ham on the boards with 15. In the last four games, the Lakers have won by at least a 15-point margin. (No wonder the spread is double digits.)

Regardless of how hot these teams are, the fact remains one team dominates on offense and the other on defense. But on strength of roster alone, it’s hard to choose the Magic over the Lakers, even with the big spread. I’m going with LeBron and the Lakers.
