FREE NBA Pick: Detroit Pistons vs Phoenix Suns

The Detroit Pistons look to keep things rolling as they welcome the struggling Phoenix Suns into their home arena this afternoon. The Suns are coming off an exciting victory over the Bucks that had long time vet Jamal Crawford nail a buzzer-beater jump shot with 0.8 seconds left in regulation that sealed the victory for Phoenix. The start of the season has been completely different for these two teams. The Pistons have been playing a strong brand of basketball and are competitive night in night out. The same can’t be said about the Suns, as they’re a young team still trying to find an identity and their place in the grueling Western Conference.

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have been playing very well. They’ve won 5 of their last 7 games and they’ll be looking to stay hot after outlasting the Rockets in a 116-111 overtime victory. The Pistons have been led by their two towers in Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond. Griffin has been having a terrific season so far, averaging 25 points 10 rebounds and nearly 5 assists, while Andre Drummond has been averaging 19.5 points and 16 rebounds. Those are some monstrous numbers. These two have caused many problems for defenses. There’s no stopping the two of them, the best thing opposing teams can do is contain them and try to deny these two players the basketball. As a team, the Pistons are shooting 43% from the field putting up an average of 111.3 points per game.

Phoenix Suns

It seems like issues for the Phoenix Suns just keep on adding up. They’ve dropped 14 out of their first 18 games. A lot of the blame can be put on their problems defensively. The Suns are one of the worst teams in the NBA defensively giving up 114 points per game while allowing opposing teams to shoot almost 50% from the field, the second highest mark in the league. The Suns have let opposing teams score more than 120 points four times this season. Although it’s been a rough start, the Suns are still a very young team learning how to play together.  Currently, they are too inconsistent and are lucky they squeezed a surprising victory over the Bucks on Friday night. Phoenix’s poor play has taken away from, elite scoring guard, Devin Booker’s strong play. Booker has been averaging a team-high 24 points per game on 43.7% shooting. He’s played in 15 games this season and has put up double-digit points in all of them. Rookie, big man Deandre Ayton has also been doing his part averaging a double-double with 16.5 points and 10.3 rebounds while shooting 61% from the floor.

If the Suns want to have any chance at even being competitive with the Pistons tonight, they’ll have to put their focus on the defensive end. They have players like Booker, Ayton, and Jackson who know how to put the ball in the net. The Suns are just being bullied and teams are getting away with practically whatever they want. Big men Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond are very aware of the Suns’ defensive struggles and will look to use it to their advantage as they thrive on bully ball. After a nice Thanksgiving meal, both Drummond and Griffin are probably well rested, reenergized and ready to have things go their way against the struggling Suns. I have the Detroit Pistons running away with the victory in Sunday afternoon’s contest.

Pick: Detroit Pistons -8.5
