ESPN NBA Picks Portland Trail Blazers vs. Charlotte Hornets
This is the first contest between these two teams this season. Charlotte will be looking to pick up a win to keep them in the playoff race, as they are currently 8th seed in the East. Portland will be looking to build on the momentum they have had in their last three games and extend their win streak to four.
Charlotte has shown some great potential this season, Kemba Walker has come out the gates playing great basketball and has carried Charlotte to wins all by himself. This matchup with Portland will be a hard one to win for Charlotte. Charlotte has many struggles away from their home court having a record of 5-13 away from home.
If Charlotte wants to win this matchup against Portland they will have to do more than score. Charlotte is a great offensive team, they are ranked 9th in points per game. They can take and make a high number of shots. What holds them back is their lack of rebounding and defense. They are ranked 21st in rebounds as well as points allowed per game. They will have to play aggressive defense against Portland, and they will have to key in on and stop Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum from taking over the game offensively. Charlotte will also have to be aggressive on the boards, they can’t afford to give Portland multiple chances at scoring. A bright spot and fun player to watch is Kemba Walker, he will be looking to score as much as possible and if he is hitting his shots he will be hard to stop.
Portland Trail Blazers
Portland has been playing great basketball this season, they are the 4th seed in a competitive Western Conference with a record of 25-17 and they are currently on a three-game winning streak. Portland is coming into this matchup fresh off a win against the Chicago Bulls. CJ McCollum scored 24 points and Damian Lillard scored 16 points. Although Lillard scored 16 points he shot 4/12 and was unable to find his game offensively.
If Portland wants to win this matchup against Charlotte, Damian Lillard will have to play better offensively, he can’t afford to have a bad shooting night especially not against a great offensive team like Charlotte. Also, Portland will have to do what they do best and that is rebound, they are ranked 3rd in rebounds per game and they should use that to their advantage as they go up against a struggling rebounding team.
