The San Antonio Spurs visit instate rivals, Houston Rockets. The Spurs come in hot to this one, winning 9 of their last 10 games. The Rockets lost in overtime to Memphis earlier this week. These teams met three times before, Houston leading the series 2-1. However, San Antonio remains only 3 games behind the Rockets in the Southwestern division. This could be an important preview for what might come in the playoffs.
After a 1-6 rough patch, the Spurs went on a 9-game win streak. But it ended against the Miami Heat on Wednesday. DeMar DeRozan scored 16 with a season-high 15 rebounds and 6 assists. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 17. The Spurs bench played particularly well, among 4 players, they accumulated 59 points. Statistically, both teams play similar ball, the Heat just simply outlasted them, managing the clock expertly. The Spurs need to generate more turnovers and make better shot selections.
LaMarcus Aldridge plays like he did during his best years in Portland. During the 9-game win streak he averaged 23.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. He only missed 5 of his 41 free throw. He averages 21.1 points and 9 rebounds this season, and made the All-Star game for the 7th time in his career. With the addition of DeRozan, Popovich relies less on him, allowing his TS% to go .57 to .58.
The Rockets went 12-1 before losing to the Grizzles. They only lose by less than two in both occasions (by 1 to the Golden State Warriors). In their game Wednesday night, Harden poured in the points, scoring 57. He went 9-17 from beyond the arc and made all 12 of his free throws. Furthermore, he got 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Chris Paul scored 18 along with Clint Capela‘s 14. The Rockets made more three-pointers, caused more turnovers and blocked more shots. But the Grizzles out rebounded them by nearly 20 and got to the foul line too often. In the end, former Rocket, Chandler Parsons scored the game winner from deep.
James Harden plays some of the best ball not only of his career, but in the history of the sport. Other than this game, he scored 50 in 6 other games. His 43.6 points per game in January ranks 8th best all-time. His season average of 36.1 ranks 7th, behind only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain (5 seasons). He leads the NBA this season in FG, FGA, FT, FTA, 3P, 3PA, USAGE%, OWS and Value over Replacement. After yet another All-Star appearance, he hopes to win the MVP again and possibly a championship ring.

Not a lot of teams can contain Harden this season – if any. But the Grizzles outlasted them. With solid defense and game management from Popovich, the Spurs could win this game. DeMar needs to play lockup D against Harden. Aldridge needs to block some shots and not foul so much. It seems like it is up to the bench. Houston plays the worst with their bench, ranking dead last in the NBA. But the Spurs play at a top-10 level. Can the Spurs outlast the Rockets and the Harden, and even out the series? I say yes, I am going with the Spurs.
