The Orlando Magic are looking to get a win back as they host John Wall and the Wizards.
The Orlando Magic are looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss against the Pistons on Wednesday night. After having a double-digit lead in the first and third quarter, they could not keep it up going into the fourth. The Magic were looking to get a three game win streak, but instead coughed up the game at home in the last quarter. Their sloppiness and lack of effort led to losing on the offensive board and at the free throw line as well as 20 turnovers. Coach Steve Clifford did not have any good words for the bench after the loss. He showed his frustration with the players by saying, “If we’re going to play eight, nine, ten [guys], we’re going to need five or six to be good, play well. Tonight, obviously we just didn’t have that. Starters were really good. The bench was…whoa. I mean, really bad. Not even competitive in either half. Makes it hard to win in this league.”
Everything wasn’t all bad, though. The starters for the Magic do continue to share the ball well, dishing out 28 assists. They kept up a good hustle the entire game and defended the rim with 8 blocked shots.
Although they have had some bright moments, the Wizards continue to struggle to pick up the pace. With talk swirling around about wanting to ditch coach Scott Brooks, the unrest in the team shows. After a slow 119-100 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, Brooks comments “There’s only one way to do it and it’s doing it together.” Not much team unity has been seen lately for the Wizards. The expectations of this veteran team of talented individuals was not a 2-8 start, but it doesn’t seem like Brooks will be going anywhere anytime soon.
Before the start of the season, John Wall announced goals of being MVP, but with the Wizard’s current standing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, this doesn’t seem very tangible. There would have to be an abrupt turn around for the Wizards offensively as well as defensively, currently giving up more points in the first eight games than any other team since 1990.There are many aspects of this team that are contributing to the problem, but Wall surely isn’t pulling them into the light. He is shooting 27.9 percent from the three and is averaging 4.2 turnovers per game. Not what you would expect from the “MVP”. With a highly ranked strength of schedule, the Wizards are going to have to pick up the pace to get anything out of this season.
