Line & Odds: Michigan +435/North Carolina -500 — Over/Under: 145.5

The Michigan Wolverines visit the #13 North Carolina Tar Heels at the Dean Smith Center Wednesday night as they face off in the ACC/Big Ten challenge.

The Tar Heels are coming off the worst offensive performance in school history against Michigan State in the Maui Invitational as they lost 45-63. North Carolina had the lowest shooting percentage in program history at 24.6 %, which includes shooting 5% (1-for-18) from the three point line. Junior forward Luke Maye has been a force averaging 19 points on 52.9% shooting, 10 rebounds, two assists and one block per game. He can get his offense from anywhere on the court and in multiple ways. Post up? Check. Spot up? Check. Fast break scores? Check. Off the screen? Check. Junior guard Kenny Williams has also played well for North Carolina averaging 14 points on 50.9% shooting, 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals. He provides efficient offense and great help defense that allows this team to be successful. The weakness of this team has been its defense as they allow 71.8 points per game (173rd in CBB) on 41.2% shooting (112th in CBB). That definitely needs to get better if they are to contend for the National Championship again this season.

The Michigan Wolverines have had a good season so far with their lone loss of the season coming against LSU. While they have played well this season they do have some weaknesses like all teams do. With Michigan it is their lack of depth. They rely on juniors G Charles Matthews and F Moritz Wagner as well as senior guards Duncan Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman. Matthews has been doing it all averaging a team high 16.7 points on 56.8% shooting to go with 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks. Wagner has also done well averaging 15.3 points on 54.8% shooting and a team high 8.6 rebounds. Robinson and Abdur-Rahkman are also averaging double-digits with 13 and 11 points averaged respectively. Offensively these four are able to have the Wolverines on the top of the charts in multiple offensive categories. However, their defense takes a hit especially against three point shooting where they are allowing 37.1% and rank 259th in the nation. Definitely something to look out for.

North Carolina

  • 11-1 SU in their last 12 games
  • 5-0 SU in their last 5 home games

  • 13-2 SU in their last 15 games
  • 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games

North Carolina is still trying to find consistent basketball, but their talent has been able to get them through games. Running into one of the best teams in the country in that kind of form is a bad combination and the Tar Heels paid the price. I see a bounce back game from them and expect Maye to have a big game.
