March Madness will soon arrive as season conference play is near conclusion as season conference tournament is around the corner. Teams within a conference are too familiar with each other and looking to more bragging rights. In the matchup between Auburn and LSU, Auburn is looking to add onto that as they pummeled LSU, 95-70, back on January 27th of last year. Auburn shot 54.1% (33-61) from the field but most importantly 43.8% (14-32) from three-point range. LSU did not shot well as they shot 43.1% (25-58) from the field and 22.2% (4-18) from three-point range. Auburn dominated the boards as they came down 38 boards in comparison to LSU’s 24 boards. However, Auburn did most of their damage on the defensive boards with 24. LSU had less scoring opportunities as Auburn’s defensive rebounding prowess limited LSU’s second chance scoring opportunities. Former Auburn Tiger Mustapha Heron led the way with 21 points, nine rebounds, 4 of 6 from three-point range and 8 of 10 from the field.

Auburn Tigers (16-6)

The Auburn Tigers are back on track with a three-game win streak after their recent skid. The Tigers finally have Austin Wiley back as his presence is significant towards the team’s success. Wiley came back from injury in Auburn’s 76-62 win against Florida. Wiley contributed two points and two rebounds off the bench. Now that Auburn is fully healthy, they can regain their footing as conference tournament and NCAA tournament are around the corner. The Tigers have the offensive and defensive tools to make a run into late March. On the offensive end, the Tigers shoot 46% (103rd) from the field, 53.3% (92nd) from two-pointers and 37.4% (43rd) from three-pointers. They are a very good offensive rebounding team as they rank 11th in the nation. They also truly rely on ball movement as they rank 56th in the nation with 350. Lastly, their elite scoring offense averages 83.9 points per game, 16th in the nation. In their upcoming matchup against LSU, Auburn will need to prevent LSU from finding great success on two-pointers as LSU does shoot 55.6% (36th) from within the three-point range, which contributes largely to their overall field goal percentage of 47.5% (44th). Auburn will also need to keep LSU off the free throw line as they shoot 76.4% from the stripe, good for 16th in the nation. Offensive rebounding is a huge part of LSU’s game as they rank 32nd in the nation with 282. Auburn will need to limit these as LSU has a thing for offensive rebounding as it was evident in their OT comeback win against Missouri a few weeks ago. Auburn will need to contain LSU’s offense as it is good as theirs, averaging 83.4 points per game, 18th in the nation.  However, though, Auburn will need to force LSU into turnovers as well as foul trouble, and keep LSU off the three-point line despite their subpar percentage (32.7%) as they do hit timely shots to truly upset them.

LSU Tigers (18-4) #21

Despite their one point loss to Arkansas, the Tigers have been playing good basketball, winning 8 of their 9 games since entering the new year. The crucial play of their three key players in Tremont Waters (15.6 PPG & 5.6 APG), Naz Reid (13.9 PPG, 6 RPG, 3P%: 38.9% ), and Skylar Mays (13.1 PPG & 2P%: 59.8%) have contributed largely to their recent success. If LSU wants to make a run late into March, the Tigers will have to clean up some things on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. They will need to cut down on turnovers and avoid foul trouble. In addition, they will need to rebound better on the defensive end as well as shoot better from three-point range and cough up more ball movement to see complete success. On the other hand, especially in their upcoming matchup against Auburn, they will need to ensure that Auburn does not shoot well…giving up second chance scoring opportunities to LSU. As much as LSU needs to involve more ball movement, they will need to limit the ball movement of Auburn as Auburn thrives off ball movement, ranking 56th in the nation with 350. LSU will need to also take advantage of Auburn’s weaknesses, which are: FT: 69.7% (197th); TOV: 287 (132nd); PF: 419 (226th); DRB: 518 (312th). If LSU can follow this blueprint, they will successfully defeat Auburn.
