SEC preseason contender Auburn Tigers did not have Wednesday nights match up with the Ole Miss Rebels originally circled as a game to worry about prior to the season. However, with a strong start to the season from the Rebels and steady play throughout the SEC, it appears every conference game will be a battle and Wednesday at the Pavilion should not disappoint.
The Auburn Tigers head into Oxford having not played since their 95-49 thrashing of North Texas. With 4 of their first 6 games in SEC Play, the Bruce Pearl coached team will need to show up for battle. Led by guard Senior Bryce Brown (15.3PPG), Junior guard Jared Harper (14.9 PPG, 6.8 APG), and Center Austin Wiley(11.9 PPG, 5.8 RPG) the Tigers will enter a raucous arena where a fast start will be crucial. In each of their two losses to Duke and NC State, slow starts likely cost them the game. The Tigers lead the SEC in 3 point field goal percentage, steals, and blocks and these factors will contribute to controlling not only the tempo of the game but also the crowd. If they don’t come out shooting, I still expect a Bruce Pearl coached squad to stay in the game with aggressive defense.
The Ole Miss Rebels come into tonight confident having won 8 straight games after their 10 point victory SEC opening win over Vanderbilt. First year head coach, Kermit Davis, has instilled life into the program that finished last in 2018 and was predicted to so again this year. He has done so by implementing and aggressive 1-3-1 zone, discipline as they rank 1st in the SEC in free throw percentage, and impressive guard play. The Tigers are led by their back court trio of Junior Breein Tyree (18.4 PPG), Senior Terence Davis (15.2 PPG), and Sophomore Devontae Schuler (10.4 PPG). Tyree was names SEC player of the week after his career high 31 points against Vanderbilt. The Rebels rank dead last in rebounding and this game could very well come down to loose balls and rebounding. The Pavilion will be sold out Wednesday evening with a reignited fan base eager to see if their team can extend their undefeated home record (6-0) this season.

Will Auburn be rusty coming off nearly two weeks off? Can they get to the free throw line? In a game with two coaches familiar with each other both having aggressive defenses, I like the under in this one. Auburn should struggle with the layoff paired up with an arena that will be rocking should lead to some shooting woes in the first half. Auburn has a hard time getting to the free throw line and Ole Miss cant rebound, this should lead to many 1 shot possessions keeping the score down.
