A little over two weeks ago, on January 15th, down to the wire contest between the Broncos and Wolf Pack as Boise State staged a second half comeback to lead by two with seconds remaining prior to Nevada’s Cody Martin heroics with a go-ahead 3-pointer to rob the Broncos of a victory in a tight one, 72-71. Cody Martin led the way with 16 points and 4 assists, and Jordan Caroline with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Boise State Broncos (10-11)
The record say it all about the Broncos’ unsatisfactory season, coming into Saturday’s contest on a two-game win streak…looking to avenge a narrow lost against the Wolf Pack a couple weeks ago. If the Broncos want to make their season relevant and reach the postseason, defeating the Wolfpack will significantly help their case in gaining momentum to finish the season strong. However, in order to do so, Justinian Jessup (12.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3P%: 40.9%, APG:2.6), Alex Hobbs (11.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG, FT%=91.4%, 3P%: 35%), and Derrick Alston (10.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG, FT%: 83.3%, FG%: 49.3%) will really have to step it up. They can’t do it alone though as their supporting cast will also need to step up if they want to reach the postseason. On defense, the Broncos will need to rebound better on this end, wreaking havoc with pressure to create steals (246th) and block shots (281st) to get out in transition to create more scoring opportunities. They also have plenty of offensive woes as they are mainly 252nd in the nation, averaging 70.7 points per game. Offensive rebounding (186th) as well as 3-point shooting (212th) are key components for the Broncos to win Saturday’s matchup against Nevada.
Nevada Wolf Pack (20-1) #8
Despite their blowout loss to the New Mexico Lobos, they have been excellent this season. In their lone loss against the Lobos, the Wolf Pack were inefficient from the field at 33% (19-57) especially from 3-point range at 18% (4-22). They were also outrebounded, 47-37. On the other hand, the Lobos shot well enough from the field at 45% (31-68) as well as 37% (11-29) from 3-point range. They also beat the Wolf Pack in the assist department, 18-11. The Lobos dominated the game from start to finish. However, the Wolf Pack have since regained their footing and are currently on a six-game win streak. Behind the scoring attack of Jordan Caroline (18.6 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 3P%:43.5%, FG%:49.3%), Caleb Martin (18.5 PPG, 4.9 RPG), Jazz Johnson (11 PPG, FT%:90.4%), and Cody Martin (10.9 PPG, 5.2 APG, 4.3 RPG), the Wolf Pack can make a run late into March if they continue to play at their best. The Wolf Pack are obviously better than the Broncos, but in order to beat the Broncos, they will to need shoot efficiently from 3-point range as well as control the boards and force the Lobos to work hard on defense through plenty of ball movement.

Boise State will have plenty on their hands against one of the top 10 teams in nation. The Broncos will need to play disciplined and fundamental basketball…a well rounded game to knock off Nevada. If the Broncos want to really earn a key victory against the Wolf Pack, they will need to specifically crash the offensive boards hard and shoot efficiently, very efficiently from 3-point range…taking a page from New Mexico’s book. However, the result will be definite as the Wolfpack have too much offensive power despite their inefficient 3-point shooting, will defeat the Broncos.
