This Wednesday, the Creighton Bluejays will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Xavier Musketeers.
Creighton has not experienced quite the same success this year that they have in years past. They currently sit at 13-11 overall and only 4-7 in Big East play. The only team with a worse conference and overall record than the Bluejays is the Xavier Musketeers. Creighton is a good team offensively. They put up about 80 points per game on 49 percent shooting overall and almost 41 percent shooting from three. It’s the defensive end where they’ve struggled, however. They’re giving up 75.4 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field. But they’ve actually done a good job on the defensive end in their last three games. They’re giving up an average of 61 points per game in their last three. One of those games was against Villanova, who currently sits atop the conference with only one loss against Big East opponents. Creighton held the Wildcats to only 66 points and covered the 10 point spread. Before the Villanova game, they beat the Xavier Musketeers 76-54 at home. It was their most decisive victory in conference play. Can they take down the Musketeers on the road too?
Xavier will try to do what they can to stop the Bluejays form waltzing into the Cintas Center and stealing a victory. That might prove to be a challenge, though, as this is not the same Xavier team that was led by Chris Mack last season. They are currently 11-13 overall and 3-8 in conference play, good for last in the conference. That’s a hard fall after being consistently in the upper echelon of the conference just last season. They’ve lost six straight games and have failed to cover in every single one of them. Neither their offense or defense stands out as particularly good. They only put up an average of 72.3 points per game and give up 72.5 on defense. They have the 164th ranked scoring defense going up against the 32nd best scoring offense in Creighton. The Bluejays also have the third best three-point percentage in the nation. So where do the Musketeers rank in terms three-point defense? A measly 233rd. That’s a bad match up for Xavier, and they’ll look to their home court advantage to carry them through in this one.

ESPN College Basketball Scores Creighton Bluejays vs. Xavier Musketeers
It’s tempting to take the home dog here, especially with such a small spread. However, I just can’t get behind this Xavier team. The departures of Chris Mack, Trevonn Blueitt and others have made it too hard for me to get behind them. I have to go with the Bluejays in this one. Their high-powered offense is going to be too much for the Musketeers to handle. The recent head-to-head trends actually support the Musketeers in this one. Xavier is 5-2 at home in their last seven against Creighton. However, this is not the same Xavier team as the ones we’ve seen in the past. Creighton struggles generally defensively, but they have played well enough recently to slow down a struggling Xavier squad. Creighton should be able to extend Xavier’s losing streak to seven games in this one.
