Duke hosts Georgia Tech at high noon Saturday on the East Coast. Syracuse’s recent win at Cameron Indoor gives the Yellow Jackets hope of a possible upset.
Duke is knotted in a 5-way tie among 5-1 teams at the top of the ACC conference standings. Perhaps knowing they need to hold serve to remain in a tie for 1st place will keep them from falling asleep early Saturday against Georgia Tech. The 5 teams currently tied for 1st in the ACC are Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Louisville, and Syracuse. I don’t expect Louisville and Syracuse to still be contending for the regular season ACC crown when early March rolls around. North Carolina could stay in the mix, but Virginia and Duke are clearly the best 2 teams in the conference this season.
A big question mark for the Blue Devils heading into Saturday is whether their star point guard Tre Jones will return from a shoulder sprain sustained in Duke’s OT loss to Syracuse January 14th. Jones’ most recent Instagram post is a picture of him during a game facing away from the camera with a thumb up in the air. His followers are taking this to mean there is a good chance Jones returns Saturday against Georgia Tech. Jones is officially questionable for Saturday’s game.
Georgia Tech has played a weak schedule so far in the ACC, which is why their record stands at 3-3 at this juncture of the season. They have home wins against bottom feeders Wake Forest and Notre Dame but also surprisingly beat Syracuse on the road by 14 points. Well, maybe it isn’t THAT surprising. Syracuse has certainly been a Jekyll and Hyde type of team this season. If Georgia Tech can hang around the middle of the pack in the ACC and end up with 18+ wins, there’s always a chance of an NCAA Tournament berth. When the schedule strengthens, I expect the Yellow Jackets to take their lumps and fall to the bottom of the pack. The schedule strengthens now, folks. Georgia Tech’s next 3 contests are at Duke, home to North Carolina, and then at Florida State. Escaping that stretch of 3 games with just 1 win would be impressive for this Georgia Tech squad.

Handicapping this game may seem difficult at first considering a crucial piece of the puzzle in Tre Jones may not play Saturday. In Duke’s 2 games when Jones was absent, however, the Blue Devils still impressed. They beat Virginia by 2 at home and downed Pittsburgh by 15 at Pittsburgh. Some people might expect a bit of a letdown from Duke considering their next 4 games are against lesser opponents (Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, St. John’s, and Boston College). That’s where great coaching and a great crowd are inserted for motivation. Coach K. and the killer Cameron Crazy crowd won’t allow a letdown.
