The Marquette Golden Eagles fly into Queens, New York to take play the St John’s Red Storm on Saturday.

Marquette enters Queens, NY on Saturday coming off a very impressive 88-85 win over Seton Hall. In that contest, Marquette shot 48% from the floor and an impressive 63% from beyond the arc. Golden Eagle sophomore guard Markus Howard led the scoring charge with 32 points along with 7 rebounds. Sam Hauser, Sacar Amin, and Andrew Rowsey all contributed 15 or more points in the game. It is no secret that the Golden Eagles live and die by the 3-point ball, as they are 40% from beyond the arc as a team this season. However, prior to the Seton Hall victory, Marquette dropped 4 straight games. Over the course of the season, Markus Howard is averaging 22 points per game, with Andrew Rowsey averaging 18.8 points per game. Defensively, Marquette is allowing opponents to shoot 34% from the floor and 32 rebounds per game. The Golden Eagles have lost 6 of their last 9 games.

The St. John’s Red Storm are red hot going into Saturday’s game. They are coming off two top 5 victories against Villanova and Duke. With a win today, the Johnnies will set their record even at .500. St. John’s is averaging 73 points per game while scoring at a 42% clip. They allow 71 points per game to opponents and allow them to shoot nearly 42% from the floor. St. Johns star guard Marcus Lovett was injured only 7 games into the season, and it has taken time for the Red Storm to get back on track. Shamorie Ponds has stepped up for the Johnnies averaging 20.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, and 4.7 apg. Bashir Ahmed has been a key contributor as well averaging 11.8 points per game. Justin Simon is averaging 7.3 rebounds per game and leads the Red Storm in that category. St. Johns has lost 6 of their last 7 home games, but coming off two miraculous victories it is safe to say that the Red Storm is extremely hot at the moment.

It is tough to bet against St. Johns after their latest two victories, and this serves as a major letdown spot for the Red Storm. This being said, Marquette has looked terrible as a team defensively lately and it is tough to go against the Red-hot Johnnies at home today. I expect Shamorie Ponds to have another great game and see the Marquette defense struggling to stop him. If the three point ball is not falling for Marquette, they won’t be able to stay competitive in this one. However, I see them getting their 3-ball back on track but will lean the home team in this close big east battle.
