Line & Odds: Purdue -135/Maryland +125 — Over/Under: 147.5

The 6-2 Maryland Terrapins host the 6-2 Purdue Boilermakers for some Friday night Big Ten Conference college hoops.

After a hot start, the Maryland Terrapins have lost two of their last three games. The loss to undefeated Syracuse was a tough 72-70 road loss that showed how competitive they can be. Maryland is led by a pair of sophomore guards named Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter. Cowan is averaging 14.8 PPG on 46.8% shooting to go with 4.6 RPG, 3.6 APG and 1.0 SPG while Huerter has averaged 12.3 PPG on 51.4 FG% with 4.1 RPG and a team-high 3.9 APG.  Maryland is outside the top 100 in scoring as they average 77.4 PPG, but they are efficient with the way they get their points as they have a 50.6 FG%, which ranks 27th in the country. Their defense has also been excellent this season as they allowed just 61.5 PPG on 37.2% shooting. A big reason for that is freshman forward Bruno Fernando. Fernando is averaging 10.8 PPG on 66% shooting with 5.1 RPG and a team-high 2.4 BPG. The biggest problem with the Terrapins is their assist to turnover ratio as they have 138 turnover to just 117 assists, sitting at a .85 ratio, which ranks them 268th in the country.

The Purdue Boilermakers are coming off huge back to back against ranked opponents. First, they defeated then no. 2 ranked Arizona Wildcats 89-64 at the Battle 4 Atlantis. Then they defeated no. 17 ranked Louisville 66-57, and gave them their first loss of the season. They are one of the better offensive teams in the country as they score 88.9 PPG, which ranks 21st in the nation, on 49.8% shooting. They are led by sophomore guard Carsen Edwards and senior guard Dakota Mathias. Edwards has averaged a team-high 17.4 PPG on 46.4% shooting and 4.3 RPG while Mathias has done it all averaging 15.8 PPG on 56% shooting, 4.5 RPG, a team-high 4.4 APG and 1.6 SPG. It’s also important to note that Mathias takes care of the ball extremely well for averaging just 0.9 TPG. Defensively, Purdue is excellent as well as they allow 65.9 PPG on just 37.3% shooting. Freshman forward Matt Haarms has been a force down low on the defensive end as he averages a team-high 3.1 BPG. So opponents always need to watch out for him whenever they drive into the paint.

  • 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games
  • 6-2 SU in their last 8 games
  • 5-1 SU in their last 6 games at home

  • 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games
  • 16-5 SU in their last 21 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of their last 5 games

Maryland comes into this matchup with questions while Purdue has the train rolling. The Boilermakers are a sound basketball team with explosive and efficient offense while also having a good defense to back it up. However, Maryland is 4-0 at home, so this might be just what they need to get back on track. That’s why I’m going with the Terrapins to pull off the upset.
