March Madness Pick Michigan State Spartans vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
The NCAA Tournament pins 2nd seeded Michigan State against 3rd seeded Texas Tech at the U.S. Bank Stadium. Both teams have been outstanding throughout the tournament cruising through their first opponents and battling hard against number one seeds to get them to the final four. Both will be looking to advance to the championship game, and their shot at an NCAA title.
Michigan State is 32-6 on the season. The Spartans are led by Cassius Winston, Joshua Langford and Nick Ward. Winston is a junior guard leading the team in scoring with a little under 19 PPG. He is also their leading assist man with 7.6 per game. Langford is a junior guard averaging 15 PPG. Ward is a junior forward averaging 13.2 PPG and an efficient 6.1 RPG.
Michigan State is a great all-around team that has success on the offensive side as well as the defensive side of the ball. In their last game they were matched up against a stacked Duke team, a team many favored to win the NCAA tournament. It was a close game that had Michigan State taking the lead by four heading into the half. In the second Duke came out and made a run to get themselves back into the game, it was close pretty much through the whole second half and no team had the edge. Finally Michigan State was able to end the game and get the win by one point. What helped the Spartans get the win was their defensive play. They forced turnovers and made Duke play at a slower pace. Duke had 17 turnovers in this game to Michigan State’s seven and ultimately those turnovers lost Duke the game because Michigan State got more chances at the bucket and easy fast break scores.
The keys to victory for Michigan State against Texas Tech is defense and rebounding. Michigan State is a great defensive team and if they want a shot at beating Texas Tech they will have to shut down their leading scorers. Michigan State will also have to rebound the ball at a high level. Duke outrebounded them by 11 and on any other day that would have been enough for Duke to put them away. Texas Tech is a great rebounding team and if Michigan State starts giving them second chances they will capitalize.
Texas Tech is 30-6 on the season, they are led by Jarret Culver, Davide Moretti and Matt Mooney. Jarret Culver, sophomore guard, is currently their leader in PPG, averaging a little under 19, he is also the leader in RPG at 6.4 and APG at 3.8. Davide Moretti, sophomore guard, is the second leading scorer with an average of 11.6 PPG. Matt Mooney, senior guard, is the third leading scorer at 11 PPG.
Texas Tech has proved throughout the tournament that defense wins games. Their defense has been outstanding and it will be no different in this matchup. In the game against Gonzaga, Texas Tech played great defense holding one of the best offensive teams in the nation to 69 points. They forced Gonzaga out of the paint and Gonzaga settled for threes, going 7-26 as a team. They also forced Gonzaga into 16 turnovers. Overall Texas Tech’s defense made Gonzaga uncomfortable and it stopped them from getting into their offensive rhythm.
Texas Tech’s keys to victory will be their great defensive play and the offensive play of their three leading scorers. Texas Tech has been arguably the best defensive team in the tournament and if they keep their focus on their defense they have a great chance at beating Michigan State. Michigan State has a great defense as well and Texas Tech relies heavily on their three leading scorers to do a bulk of their scoring, so these three can’t afford to have a bad game. They will have to be locked in and ready to lead the team in scoring.

March Madness Scores Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Michigan State Spartans
I think this game is going to be a close one. Both of these teams are very similar in their approach to games, they both love to turn their great defensive play into offense. Lucky for Texas Tech they are a better defensive team and they will look to make Michigan State’s offense uncomfortable and they will force turnovers. The only thing that stands in Texas Tech’s way is the fact that Michigan State is a great offensive team with great scorers, but Texas Tech has met better competitors and won because they knew how to shut down the best players on the court. I put my money on the defense of Texas Tech. It has propelled them to wins and I believe it will do the same in this matchup.
