The Big Ten continues their conference championship competitions with a quarterfinals matchup between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Spartans. On Thursday, Ohio State beat out the Indiana Hoosier in the second round, 79-75. After seizing the Big Ten regular season crown, Michigan State sat out the first two rounds. These teams met each other twice during the season, Michigan State won both. In history, the Spartans and the Buckeyes battled a total of 124 games; the Spartans leads the matchup, winning 73 of them.

Ohio State controlled the Hoosiers early on (35-28 at halftime). Nevertheless, they struggled later on, especially in the final minutes. But the Buckeyes held their ground and finished the game with the win. Three starters scored more than 15 points against the Hoosiers. Sophomore forward Kaleb Wesson scored 17 points and savaged the glass with 13 rebounds. Also he contributed defensively with 2 steals and 3 blocks. During the regular season, he led the Buckeyes in points (14.6), rebounds (6.7) and FG% (51.1). His brother, junior forward Andre Wesson accumulated 13 points and 3 steals. Senior guard Keyshawn Woods led the team with 18 points with 9-13 shooting from the field.

Ohio State ranked 2nd to last in their conference in most offensive statistics. In wins, the Buckeyes rely on their stars, Kaleb Wesson and CJ Jackson. The Big Ten elected Wesson as an honorable mention this year. On the other side of the ball, six times they held their opponents to under 60 points. They ranked 39th in the country in points allowed per game (65.6).

Michigan State finished the regular season with a senior night win against interstate rivals the Michigan Wolverines. After losing at halftime, the Spartans rallied in the 2nd, scoring 46 points (final score: 75-63). Big Ten Player of the Year, junior guard Cassius Winston scored a game-high 23 points with 7 assists. Sophomore forward Xavier Tillman scored 17 (9 of which from the charity stripe), he hauled in 6 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. Senior forward and Boxout King Kenny Goins snatched 16 rebounds. Like most games, Michigan State out-rebounded the Wolverines 46 to 20 and only allowed 7 FTAs.

During his conference-MVP year, Cassius Winston led the Spartans scoring (19) and assists (7.6). His assists per game ranks 3rd in the country. But most importantly he leads Tom Izzo‘s team on the field. The Spartans ranked 2nd in the conference in offensive points per game, 4th in the country in assists, 8th in the country in total rebounds and 13th in the country in FG%. On the defensive side, they ranked 1st in the conference in blocks and FG% and 4th in points allowed per game. Winston deserves all the accolades for leading the Spartans to yet another brilliant regular season.

Free NCAA BB Pick Michigan State Spartans vs Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State needed the win against the Hoosiers. They went 2-6 before that point. The Buckeyes showed an offense at their highest potential in their matchup against the Hoosiers. However, they simply struggle to score most of the time; in their last game against the Spartans they only scored 44 points with 36 FG% as a team. Moreover, Cassius Winston helped beat the Buckeyes twice before, I see him and the Spartans coming into a neutral battlefield and beating the Buckeyes yet again.

My Pick: Michigan State (-11)
