NCAA Basketball Pick Oklahoma Sooners vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
A Big 12 matchup pins 7th seed Oklahoma against 10th seed West Virginia. Oklahoma finished the season off pretty well winning three of their last five games and beating a strong Kansas team. West Virginia took some blows at the end of the season and only won two out of their last five.
Oklahoma went 19-12 on the season and 7-11 against conference opponents. The Sooners are led by Christian James, Brady Manek and Kristian Doolittle. James is a senior guard and the leading scorer with 14.5 PPG. He is also a great rebounder with 6.4 per game. Manek is a sophomore forward averaging 11.7 PPG. He also grabs boards at a high rate with 6.1 RPG. Doolittle is a junior forward and the third leading scorer with 11 PPG. He is also the lead rebounder with 6.9 per game.
Oklahoma played West Virginia twice during the season. Oklahoma lost the first matchup and won the second. In the second matchup, Oklahoma came out the gates taking and making a high number of shots. It led them to a large lead heading into the half. West Virginia was forced to play catchup and they did their best outscoring Oklahoma in the second, but the first half lead of 14 points was too much for West Virginia to get past. Oklahoma got the win, 92-80. The keys to victory for Oklahoma were their great shooting percentage, they shot 59 percent from the field and 47 percent from three. They shot 29-49, while West Virginia took 13 more shot and went 26-62. Another key to victory was free throw shooting, Oklahoma went to the line 29 times and made 24 which is an efficient 82 percent. West Virginia got to the line 25 times and only made 17 which is only 68 percent. Overall Oklahoma played aggressively and took advantage of their shots. They took their time and found the right shots and it led to a high field goal percentage. If Oklahoma wants to repeat this performance they will have to take and make high-quality shots, play great defense and force West Virginia to take bad shots.
West Virginia went 12-19 on the season and 4-14 against conference opponents. West Virginia is led by Derek Culver and Lamont West. Culver is a freshman forward leading the team in scoring with 12.1 PPG. He is also the team’s leading rebounder with 10.2 per game. West is a junior forward and the second leading scorer with 10.5 PPG. West Virginia has had a bad time with injuries and violations and that has lead to some of their best players being sidelined.
West Virginia took the win in the first matchup up against Oklahoma. In the first half Oklahoma kept it close and was only down by seven. In the second half, Oklahoma tried to make up the points, but West Virginia stayed right with them not giving them any room to make a comeback. West Virginia got the win, 79-71. The shooting percentages were close to the same, but the one stat that put West Virginia in the win column was the fact that they outrebounded Oklahoma 46 to 30 and 18 of those 46 were offensive rebounds which gave West Virginia multiple chances to score. The rebounding was the deciding factor in the win for West Virginia. If they want to repeat this performance they will have to be aggressive on the boards and get those second chances to score.
