Michigan State Spartans vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-2) vs #3 Michigan State Spartans (7-1)

College Basketball: Tuesday December 5th, 2017, 7:00 PM ET | Louis Brown Athletic Center

Line: Michigan State Spartans -14

Over/Under: 134

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights got off to a 6-0 start before losing their last two to the Florida State Seminoles and they got blown out in their Big Ten opener to the number twelve team in the country, the Minnesota Golden Gophers by a score of 89-67. They will look to avoid an 0-2 conference record when they host the number three team in the country tonight. Against Minnesota the Scarlet Knights struggled to shoot the ball and were only able to shoot 32.4% from the field and 27.8% from behind the arc. On the defensive side they allowed Minnesota to shoot 45.9% from the field and 40% from deep range. Against the number three ranked Spartans they must find a way to shoot better, otherwise the Spartans are going to run all over Rutgers. The only way for the Scarlet Knights to pull a huge upset is for them to slow down Michigan State’s offensive, limit their own turnovers, and win the rebounding battle to potentially get second chance opportunities.

The Michigan State Spartans are on a roll as of late and after losing to the Duke Blue Devils, they have now won six consecutive games which include blow out wins over the defending national champions, the North Carolina Tar Heels and the number five ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In their Big Ten opener they blew out the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 86-57. The Spartan defense held Nebraska to 27.7% shooting from the field which led the way to their blowout win. Nick Ward was the leading scorer for the Spartans with 22 points on 6 of 7 shooting while also adding 7 rebounds. It is worth noting Ward did all of this in only 16 minutes of game time. In order to win in a hostile environment the Spartans will need to continue play shutdown defense while not letting the Scarlet Knights gain any kind of momentum from their home crowd which could fuel a rally.

Michigan State Spartans

Despite the Rutgers getting blown out last time they touched the floor, they were actually able to hang around for majority of the game. With this being Michigan State’s first true road game I think they will have some struggles in a hostile environment. With that being said I am going to pick the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to keep it within arms reach against the Spartans and with the points I think they will be able to win in terms of the spread. I still think Michigan State will come away with their seventh straight win, but I do not think it will be by more than 14.
