ESPN NCAA Basketball Pick SMU Mustangs vs. UCF Knights

Some American Conference action with UCF taking on SMU at Moody Coliseum-Dallas. UCF is 16-5 and 6-3 against conference opponents. SMU is 12-10 and 4-6 against conference opponents.

SMU Mustangs

SMU has been struggling to get wins, losing three straight. They will be looking to get a win and get back to their winning ways. SMU is led by Jahmal McMurray, Jimmy Whitt Jr. and Ethan Chargois. McMurray is a senior guard leading the team in scoring with 18.3 PPG. Whitt Jr. is a junior guard leading the team in assists with 4.5 APG and the second leading scorer with 12.4 PPG. Chargois is a sophomore forward leading the team in rebounding with 6.8 RPG and he also pitches in an average of 12.4 PPG.

The Mustangs’ best win was against Georgetown Hoyas. It was a close game throughout, but the Mustangs were just too much. Three of SMU’s starters scored in double digits with Jahmal McMurray scoring 19 and grabbing 9 rebounds. SMU shot 47 percent and played very aggressively and got to the line 25 times. SMU just played like they wanted it more and it worked out for them getting the win 81-73. SMU’s worst loss came against then-ranked 21st Houston Cougars. Houston took the lead in the first half 31-22 and SMU was forced to play from behind. SMU did play a great second half, but it was a little too late and Houston got the win 69-58. Whitt Jr. played a great game with 20 points and four of SMU’s starters scored in double digits, but their bench was non-existent scoring only 2 points. If SMU wants to beat UCF their bench will have to be aggressive and look to take and make high-quality shots.

UCF Knights

UCF is playing great against conference opponents and will be looking to grab another win. UCF is led by B.J Taylor, Aubrey Dawkins and Tacko Falls. Taylor is a senior guard leading the team in scoring with 17.1 PPG. Dawkins is a junior guard averaging 15 PPG and 5.3 RPG. Falls is a senior center leading the team in rebounding with 7 per game.

The Knights’ best win was against UConn Huskies. UCF took a 12 point lead heading into the half and it looked like the game might get out of hand if they continued to take and make high-quality shots. The second half UConn made a huge run and got back into the game, but UCF’s first-half lead helped them get the win 73-67. B.J. Taylor had a great game scoring 21 points and UCF’s bench outscored UConn’s bench 22-4. UCF’s worst loss came against Memphis Tigers. Memphis came out the gates making shots and outscoring UCF by ten in the first half leading UCF to play catch up and unfortunately, UCF couldn’t stop Memphis from scoring and Memphis took the win by a large margin 77-57.  If UCF wants to beat SMU they will have to be aggressive on defense and force SMU to take contested shots.

ESPN NCAA Basketball Scores UCF Knights vs. SMU Mustangs

UCF seems like the better team when it comes to record, but SMU has great scorers. It is hard to say who wins in this matchup because both have struggled as well as been successful against the same teams. I think the game will come down to bench play, which bench will play aggressive and look to score. SMU has more scorers, but if UCF can stop their leading scorers it will be hard for SMU to get the win. Expect UCF to get the win.

Pick: UCF +1
