It is a Big West Conference Finals rematch between Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. Fullerton took the Big West Championship last year in a 71-55 victory against the Anteaters to automatically move on to the NCAA tournament. Irvine learned from their lost and will be prepared to seek revenge against Fullerton as they are off to a winning start.

UC Irvine

UC Irvine (UCI) is off to a historic start in program history having won 12 of its 16 non-conference games, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since the 1981-82 team. They gained ten wins by Dec. 15, the earliest in program history.

UCI junior guard, Max Hazzard, continues his hot start this season leading the team in points per game (12.1) and three-pointers (42). He received the Big West Player of the Week honor twice this season and seems not to be slowing down. Hazzard scored 20+ points in each of his last two games and led his team in scoring four out of his last five games. Hazzard is a big part as to why the Anteaters are dominant this season.

UC Irvine is coming off their first conference game against UC Davis which went into overtime. The Anteaters battled to victory (71-69) behind Evan Leonard’s game-high 22 points, five were in the extra period. That is now two wins in a row for UCI. The Anteaters are predicted to finish on top in the division, according to the Big West Preseason Poll. They hope to continue this winning momentum against Cal State Fullerton in their second conference game.

Cal State Fullerton

Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) is having an opposite season than Irvine. The Titans are 4-11 this season and lost two straight, one being their first conference game of the season against Hawaii (79-68).

Despite the losses, Fullerton shows potential with their three key players. Senior guard, Kyle Allman, Jr., is second in the conference with points per game (18.5) and scored 10+ points in 33 out of his last 34 games. Allman’s senior guard teammate, Khalil Ahmad, is fourth in the conference (second in the team behind Allman) in points per game (18.2) and is the Nov. 19 Big West Player of the Week. The reigning Big West Player of the Week is Fullerton’s Jackson Rowe. The junior forward is shooting a 57.4% from the field (58-101), which is second in the league. He also leads the team in rebounds (102) and blocks (14). The Titans have key players that are having good seasons right now but cannot seem to put it together as a team.

Per KenPom, Fullerton has the 8th toughest schedule in the nation, but that still gives no excuse for their losses. This team is still the same as last year’s team when they won the Big West Championship.

UC Irvine has great momentum right now with their winning streak. With their players’ mindset set on a Big West Conference Finals rematch against Fullerton, it seems that nothing will stop them. Irvine will come into Titan Gym determined to gain what they should have won last year in the finals. The Titans have the star power to defeat the Anteaters but cannot pull it all together. Out of the four wins Fullerton has this year, three of them depended on only one of Fullerton’s key players. The squad needs to regroup and find their groove as a team to work together for their shot at another Big West Championship.

Pick: UC Irvine -2.5
