Line & Odds: Michigan Wolverines +290/Villanova Wildcats -140 — Over/Under: 144.5

We’re finally here at the Championship game of the NCAA tournament featuring the No. 3 seeded Michigan Wolverines versus the No. 1 seeded Villanova Wildcats. They will be facing off Monday night at 9:20 PM in the Alamodome.

The Villanova Wildcats are coming off an impressive 95-79 Final Four victory over the No. 1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks. Six different Wildcats scored in double figures with Eric Paschall leading the way with 24 points. Junior forward Mikal Bridges had an impactful game as well with 10 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts, 2 stls and 2 blks. The most impactful player for Villanova this season has been junior guard Jalen Brunson, who has averaged 19.2 PPG on 52.7 FG% to go with 3.1 RPG, 4.7 APG and 0.9 SPG. All these players have helped Villanova rank as one of the top offensive teams in the country averaging 86.8 PPG (1st in CBB) on 50.1 FG% (5th in CBB). They are also one of the best passing teams in the country as they average 16.6 APG (18th in CBB) and have a 1.57 assist to turnover ratio (6th in CBB). Defensively they are not as strong as they allow 70.4 PPG (125th in CBB) on 42.8 FG% (105th in CBB), and a big part of that is their pace and lack of size; with their tallest player being listed at 6’9”. The X factor for the Wildcats will be sophomore guard Donte DiVincenzo, who is the third option behind Brunson and Bridges. If he can step up and have a big game then Villanova should have a great chance to capture their second title in three seasons.

The Michigan Wolverines took care of business in their Final Four matchup as they defeated the No. 11 seeded Loyola-Chicago Ramblers 69-57.  They were led by junior forward Moritz Wagner with 24 pts, 15 rebs and 3 stls. They’ll need a big night like that from Wagner again if they want to defeat Villanova, and he can do as he’s been their best player this season. Wagner is averaging 14.6 PPG on 52.8 FG% to go with 7.1 RPG and 1.0 SPG. He is complimented by the duo of junior guard Charles Matthews and senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman. Matthews is averaging 13.1 PPG on 49.9 FG% to go with 5.6 RPG and 2.4 APG while Abdur-Rahkman is averaging 12.6 PPG on 42.5 FG% to go with 3.9 RPG and 3.3 APG. With the help of these three Michigan are able to average 73.9 PPG (167th in CBB) on 46.8 FG% (61st in CBB). They like to slow the temp down and get good looks every time down the floor and they take care of the ball better than almost anyone in the country averaging 9.3 TOPG (2nd in CBB). Defensively, Michigan is much stronger and play as one unit as they allow 62.9 PPG (8th in CBB) on 42.4 FG% (81st in CBB). The X factor for this team will definitely be their bench as they’ll need multiple guys to step up and play impactful minutes.

Both these teams have gone through a lot to get to where they are. Villanova has been one of the best teams in the country all season and have continued to show their consistency all tournament. However, Michigan does have size in Wagner, which is a weakness for Villanova. If the Wolverines best player can have a game like he had in the Final Four and impose his will against the Wildcats smaller defenders then Michigan can take this championship. I just don’t see that happening consistent enough to win it all. Villanova is winning their second title in three seasons.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made is my drunken purchase to @NovaMBB 2016 natty championship game.

Perhaps I’ll make another great decision and drunkenly purchase tickets to David Wright’s retirement game on Saturday.
