NCAAF: Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 8:00 PM ET (Mercedes-Benz Stadium)

Line & Odds: Georgia Bulldogs +165/Alabama Crimson Tide -173 — Over/Under: 45

The wait is finally over as the College Football National Championship featuring SEC giants Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs is upon us.

The Alabama Crimson Tide head into this National Championship differently then they have in previous years. They are the fourth ranked team and the last to make it into the playoff, just inching by Ohio State. While the decision by the committee was questioned at first, those doubts are gone as Alabama defeated the no. 1-ranked Clemson Tigers 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl. The Crimson Tide are participating in their third straight College Football Playoff championship game, and are searching for their fifth title in nine years under Nick Saban. Alabama is one of the best all-around teams in the country with an offense that averages 37.9 PPG (12th in CFB) and 449.7 YPG (27th in CFB), while having a defense that allows just 11.1 PPG (1st in CFB) and 252.4 YPG (1st in CFB).

QB Jalen Hurts has been excellent for the Crimson Tide as he’s been effective both in the air and on the ground. Hurts has thrown for 2,125 yards on 61.3% completion to go with 17 touchdowns and one interception while also rushing for 808 yards and eight touchdowns, so he’ll definitely play a major factor in getting things open for his team. RB’s Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough have been great in the backfield as well. Harris has 129 carries for 983 yards and 11 touchdowns while Scarbrough had 120 carries for 573 yards and eight touchdowns. Biggest impact players on defense will be DB Ronnie Harrison with a team-leading 70 total tackles to go with 2.5 sacks and three interceptions. LB Rashaan Evans and DL Raekwon Davis have been excellent up front with Evans collecting a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss to go with 6.0 sacks and Davis having 9.0 tackles for loss and a team-high 7.5 sacks.

The Georgia Bulldogs started off the year strong, winning their first nine games. Their first loss came at the hands of Auburn in a 40-17 destruction. The Bulldogs were eventually able to get their revenge on Auburn after defeating them in the SEC title game 28-7. Georgia head coach and former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has the Bulldogs playing at a high level and he gets a chance to take on his mentor Saban and see who the best really is. Georgia’s offense is strong as they average 36.3 PPG (17th in CFB) and 440.3 YPG (31st in CFB), but their defense is even stronger as they allow just 15.7 PPG (5th in CFB) and 289.5 YPG (6th in CFB). This teams ability to control the game on both sides of the ball is extremely impressive and rivals that of Alabama, which makes this National Championship game even more appealing.

The Bulldogs are led by the backfield duo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, who have each rushed for over 1,000 yards. Chubb has 205 carries for 1,320 yards and 15 touchdowns while Michel had 142 rush attempts for 1,129 yards and 16 touchdowns. Georgia ranked among the best in the country in running the football as they averaged 267.4 rushing yards per game (8th in CFB). QB Jake Fromm has also played a huge role as he’s thrown for 2,383 yards on 63.7% completion to go with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. However, he doesn’t provide much production on the run, which makes him a one dimensional QB. Defensively, the most important player to keep an eye on is LB Roquan Smith, who has a team-high 124 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. LB D’Andre Walker has also been a beast with a team-high 13.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

This National Championship is sure to be a game filled with many wow moments and will sure to be one of the best we’ve had in a while. Both these teams have cemented themselves as the best and most all-around teams in the country, and in my opinion it will be the defenses that control the outcome. That is why I am going with the UNDER in the National Championship game.

What are the odds? #Athletics are 1 of just 6 MLB teams with 53 or more wins. They are also one of 15 teams at least 8 games out of 1st place. Hint: they play in a division where 3 of the 6 teams with 53+ wins live, the AL West. Their .564 win% would lead 3 of other 5 divisions.
