Michigan Wolverines Free Over/Under Prediction

With the college football season less than a month away, the anticipation increases along with the predictions. Currently, the Las Vegas odds-makers have set the over/under win total for the Michigan Wolverines at 9 wins. Although this is considered a developing year for the Wolverines due to their youngest squad in a while, they do have John Harbaugh at the helm who hasn’t failed to produce double digit wins every year he has been there.

On the offensive side, they are led by returning quarterback Wilton Speight, who threw for over 2500 yards with 18 touchdowns and an impressive 61.9 completion rate last year. Although their leading rusher De’Veon Smith is not coming back, the team has more than enough depth with Chris Evans and Karan Higdon in the backfield. The pair combined for more than 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2016. The position that was hit hardest on the offensive side was wide receiver. Amara Darboh, Jehu Chesson, and Jake Butt are gone and are going to be replaced by highly recruited but inexperienced wide receivers such as Eddie McDoom and Donovan Peoples-Jones. The offensive line remains the determining factor in the overall success of the team this year. Left tackle Grant Newsome is making a reappearance after his injury last year and talented lineman Mason Cole will be back, but the depth of players with experience after that is lacking. If the line steps up in their overall performance, they could greatly improve the success of Speight and his new receivers which ultimately helps them win more games.

The defensive team that UM sports this year will most likely go through some growing pains early on in the season. The Wolverines will lose nearly all of their starters from last year on defense including Heisman finalist Jabrill Peppers, sack leader Taco Charlton, and talented corner Jourdan Lewis. The secondary will face the most problems out of all the defensive positions this year for Michigan mostly due to the relative inexperience the players have. Freshman such as David Long and Lavert Hill will have some big shoes to fill, and hopefully they are up to the challenge. The linebacker position will dearly miss Jabrill Peppers but players such as Devin Bush and Mike McCray will look to step up and take on the additional workload. The defensive line is arguably the best part of the defense for this team. Highlighted by Rashan Gray, Maurice Hurst, and Aubrey Solomon, the line has the ability to significantly impact the outcome of every game for Michigan. Their quickness to the quarterback will make the youthful secondary’s job much easier.

Kenny Allen was the main guy for the special teams of Michigan, but he has to be replaced after his departure. Ryan Tice and Quinn Nordin will be the two kickers fighting for the job. Brad Robbins, one of the better punters of his class, will be the man in charge of the punting duties for the team.

Secondary and offensive line will be the biggest question marks for this team, but Harbaugh has done a terrific job since he has joined as head coach of Michigan. Although they are in one of the tougher conferences in college football, the schedule does not seem as formidable as it could have been. The three toughest challenges will be their first game against Florida, October 21st at Penn State and the final games against Ohio State. They definitely have the talent to obtain double-digits in wins, but they also have the inexperience to let some wins slip away. Nine seems like a stretch for this young Michigan team this season, we expect them to be close to the 9 and worst case they push. Michigan made big strides last year and it’s just going to be too tough to follow it with an encore this year.
