Nebraska‘s program record eight-game losing streak grew to nine last week against Wisconsin, but it certainly looks like the end is nearing.Freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez looks like a stud in the making throwing for a career-high 384 yards in their comeback effort. J.D. Spielman was on the end of most of that yardage hauling in nine receptions for a school-record 209 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, they couldn’t stop Jonathan Taylor or themselves resulting in their fifth loss of the season. Taylor ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns, including a game-clinching 88-yarder while the Cornhuskers committed 10 penalties for 100 yards.

Obviously, those are mistakes they can’t make against the N0. 16 team in the country and they can’t put up a repeat performance against a Northwestern team that just knocked of No. 20 Michigan State. The one thing the Nebraska defense did do well was hold the passing game to 163 yards – albeit they didn’t really need to throw the ball. Nonetheless, the primary focus will need to be shutting down the passing game against against a quarterback who just threw for over 350 yards. And if Martinez can continue his development while limiting the turnovers, Nebraska could give Northwestern a run for their money.

The Wildcats held onto to an upset win over Michigan State last week behind the play of Clayton Thorson. Thorson threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns along with running in the game-winner from two yards out. Despite the win though, there’s certainly a level of concern here for Northwestern. For the third straight week they have given up a two score lead in the second half. Akron came back from a 21-3 deficit and No. 14 Michigan came back after being down 17-0 to nothing at halftime.

The Wildcats rallied this past week after the Spartans took over the lead, but the defense has struggled in the second half and the offense is playing to conservative with a lead. Against a Nebraska team itching for a win and that just put up 21 points in the second half against a ranked Wisconsin team, they will need to put their foot on the gas in order to keep their opponent from catching up late. Regardless of what Nebraska’s record is, But for a team that ranks second to last in total rushing this season, they will once again rely on Thorson to manage the game and find the end zone as much as possible.

The ascending play of Nebraska is encouraging, but they face another tough test from their conference. Northwestern has played at an elite-level the past two weeks against two top-20 opponents, and while they get caught up in the emotions of their upset win over Michigan State I believe Pat Fitzgerald will have his team’s minds right even when facing a winless opponent. Meanwhile, Scott Frost will once again look for his first win at Nebraska as a head coach and will lean on a strong performance from Martinez, who’s improved every week. But as much as I want to root for the underdog, Nebraska has been bad on defense (ranked 105th in the nation in total defense) and at the level the Wildcats have played at the past two weeks, I don’t think they drop-off against the Cornhuskers.

Pick: Northwestern -3.5/Under 59.5
