The bowl we’ve all been waiting to see is just around the corner. That’s right, The Belk Bowl is just one day away, and we have a good matchup between two 7-5 opponents, the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Virginia Cavaliers. The Gamecocks have played a lot of tough teams close showing off their offensive ability, but they don’t have a win against a top 25 team to show for it. On the other hand, Virginia has been good for the majority of their games with quality wins over Miami and Duke.
South Carolina Gamecocks
South Carolina has gone through the SEC gauntlet and a game against Clemson this season posting the ninth toughest strength of schedule in the NCAA. Despite this, coach Will Muschamp has yet again brought another Gamecocks team bowling for the third straight year. Third year starter Jake Bentley has been very sold this year throwing for 27 touchdowns and completing 63.9% of his passes. He will be without his best target Deebo Samuel who has decided to skip this game in preparation for the draft which means Bentley will have to rely heavily on other targets, Bryan Edwards and Shi Smith. South Carolina often has to score a lot of points due to some defensive struggles they’ve faced this season. The Gamecocks give up 27.2 points per game forcing them to find the end zone four times a game. They have had to face much more potent offenses than Virginia will throw at them but it does not change the fact that opposing teams have found success scoring fairly easily.
The Virginia Cavaliers are a team that relies on their ability to defend. They average 21.8 points against per contest while scoring 28.3 points each game. They have allowed over 30 points just four times this year with two of then being overtime games. The offense will be ran by Bryce Perkins who has a good year throwing for 20 touchdowns and throwing only 9 interceptions all year along with 842 rushing yards on the season. His ability to run creates a problem for a lot of defenses he faces. They have a great rushing attack with Jordan Ellis who is just 80 yards shy of 1,000 yards for the season. This offense has the ability to put up points but the biggest test will be how legitimate this defense is as they face the physical, athletic offense of South Carolina.

This game should be a great test for both teams. The explosive offense that South Carolina possess will go up against Virginia’s stout defense. On the other hand, South Carolina’s spotty defense will have to try to stop the versatility of Bryce Perkins and the remainder of Virginia’s offense. However, the pure athleticism that South Carolina has might prove to be too much against a less physical Virginia team. I would expect a higher scoring game from South Carolina and for them to pull away at the end of the game.
