FIU finished the season tied for second place with Marshall in the C-USA East division after losing to them 28-25. QB James Morgan went 21 for 33 for 177 yards and two interceptions. Napoleon Maxwell led the rushers with nine carries for 96 yards and a touchdown. Finally, CJ Worton had five receptions for 62 yards among other receivers. FIU find themselves in the same situation they were in for the past two years: They come into the bowl game as the underdogs, but it doesn’t stop them. The Golden Panthers are 9-4 against the spread in that role under coach Butch Davis. They’re also 3-1 ATS when given more time to prepare and 7-1 ATS against teams with winning records.
Toledo did enough to finish their season in 2nd place in the West Division of the MId-American Conference. However, they managed to end their final regular season game with dominance in their 51-13 pummeling of Central Michigan. QB Eli Peters made nearly 50 percent of completions for 180 yards and a touchdown and interception. Bryant Koback led Toledo’s rushers with 22 carries for 124 yards and two TDs. Jon’Vea Johnson rounded it off with three receptions, 87 yards, and a TD. Now this team doesn’t really have better luck against the spread as they are 0-5 when facing teams who have a completion percentage of 62 percent or better under Jason Candle. Their rushing offense really showed their stuff this season, rushing 223.6 yards per game and 29 touchdowns.

It seems that plenty of sources would agree that FIU can become the team that will surprise everyone. Others would mostly disagree because of the numbers, but that shouldn’t be the case. Despite throwing the only interceptions he’s had all season, he did so well all together. The only issue the team has now is that Morgan can’t be QB in this game, so the backup will have to somehow pull out a performance similar to what Morgan delivered all season. One hope that could bring FIU the victory is the inability Toledo’s defense has to stop their passing game. This game might come down to how the offensive lineups for both teams perform. We could be wrong about this, and Toledo could take it all instead, but this game could teach us all the lesson that we should not always sleep on surprise teams like FIU.
