The stakes have been higher as the Bills of Buffalo travel south to do battle with the Panthers of Carolina. Both teams enter this preseason week 2 matchup hoping to protect an undefeated 1-0 record but only one will prevail.

At this juncture on the NFL calendar each team has 90 players on the roster and week 2 of preseason is an opportunity for front offices and fans to see each and every one of them play. Many of these players are rookies or complete unknowns so evaluating team strengths and weaknesses holistically can be challenging. Instead I'll focus on the quarterbacks in this matchup because quarterback play is extremely important and we know a little bit more about these players than the rest of the roster.

Panthers: Kyle Allen, Will Grier, Taylor Heinicke

The Panthers starting quarterback is Cam Newton. Cam Newton is a star who would have a profound impact on this game even if he plays for only a few series. However Newton has seen the past couple seasons plagued by injuries and if the Panthers let him play at all in the preseason it will likely be in week 3. The three remaining quarterbacks are all vying for the backup role and it is an intriguing race. Second year pro Kyle Allen was solid in limited action in last years regular season (20/31 for 266 yards and 2 TDs) and rookie Will Grier is a fourth round pick who put up prolific stats in college and looked decent in last weeks preseason start.
