For the better part of twenty years, the Cleveland Browns have been the rodeo clown of the NFL. But in the span of a year, the tide has changed on the shores of Lake Erie; the Browns are good.
After recovering from a historically bad 2017 season in which they went 0-16, the Browns achieved a 7-8-1 record in 2018 under the guidance of interim head coach Gregg Williams. While they have yet to achieve a record better than .500, Cleveland’s trajectory looks promising.
Although, the hype surrounding the Browns officially began to build up when they pulled off one of the biggest trades in franchise history: agreeing to acquire superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants this past April.
Another addition is that of Freddie Kitchens, who was promoted from offensive coordinator and associate head coach. He has been gifted a full arsenal of weapons on offense to attack the 2019 schedule, thanks to the remarkable savvy of Cleveland’s general manager, John Dorsey.
The goal that will be of the utmost importance for Cleveland this season is to post a winning record in their division, the AFC North. While they did achieve this goal last season, a 3-2-1 mark is not a comfortable margin for a team that not only hopes to make the playoffs, but possibly win a Conference title as well.

Even with the roster they had last season, the Browns won both of their games against intrastate rival, the Cincinnati Bengals.
Because the Steelers sent wide receiver Antonio Brown to Oakland, they are now burdened with the responsibility of reviving their receiving corps. If Pittsburgh is unable to fill the massive void left by Brown, Cleveland should gain the upper hand in that matchup, as well, as it has put together a potentially lethal pass rush and secondary, littered with young names like Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward and rookie Greedy Williams.
Home games against the Bills and Dolphins will likely be easy victories, as both have to prove that their quarterbacks can pass the ball before being considered threats on the offensive side. A road meeting with the Cardinals can be categorized as an “easy win”, as well.
However, the real challenges, and potentially the most anticipated games of the season, come when the Browns take the field against both of last year’s Super Bowl participants in Foxborough against the Patriots and at home against the Rams.
If they are able to split those big games, secure a 5-1/4-2 record in the AFC North and take advantage of the “lighter”games in their schedule, Cleveland will be well positioned for the city’s first playoff berth since in 17 years.
Under 9 wins (+110)
While the 2019 Browns might have a surplus of talent, it is too early to pencil them in as the next NFL powerhouse. There is still a lot that can go wrong for the team that finished last in their division 13 of the past 15 years.
On paper, the Cleveland looks like a formidable team. The Browns have a promising quarterback in second-year player Baker Mayfield and an even more promising defense, constructed using the draft picks they have stockpiled over the last few seasons. But keep in mind, in the past, there have been many examples of teams that looked threatening on paper who were not been able to come together in between the lines.
For instance, it is widely known that teams that are under the direction of inexperienced leaders are usually in a state of transition. This begs for questions to be answered by first-year head coach Freddy Kitchens. The former offensive coordinator will be tasked with the management of an all-time personality (on and off the field) in Beckham Jr. and the many other developing egos within Cleveland’s locker room. Will Kitchens be able to keep the team’s focus aimed at winning football games?

If the team’s core players are able to avoid injuries and stay on the field, it looks like this season will be a breakthrough for the Browns. Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, but with the combination of a light schedule and a superb collection of talent, expect the Browns to win their division and join the NFL’s elite in the 2019 playoffs.
