Two teams looking to get back into the win column square off as the Washington Redskins take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Washington looks to rebound after a 38-14 drubbing at the hands of Atlanta. Tampa Bay, losers of five of their last six, look for redemption after falling to Carolina.

Washington Redskins

The NFC East seems to change hands year in and year out. With the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles looking for a spark, the Washington Redskins have taken over the division lead. The attitude in the locker room, however, has turned somber. In their loss to the Falcons, the Redskins lost three offensive starters to season-ending injuries. Four of the five projected starters have dealt with the injury bug this season. Trent Williams has missed time with thumb surgery. Morgan Moses is dealing with a bum knee. Both starting guards, Shawn Lauvao and Brandon Scherff will miss the rest of the season.

The rest of the Washington offense, which wasn’t all that thrilling to begin with, has really struggled of late. They’re averaging 20 points per game, which ranks 25th in the NFL. The same goes for their 343.9 yards per game average. Alex Smith has played like typical Alex Smith by averaging 222 yards passing. This puts them in 24th. Oddly enough, their run game is their strong suit. The Redskins have the 10th best rushing attack at 121.9 yards rushing per game. Expect this to go down with four missing starting linemen and their rock being a revamped Adrian Peterson, who may actually eclipse the 1,000-yard mark this season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The way that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have played lately, you would think that they were trying to tank in the division to get an early pick in the 2019 draft. They sit four back of New Orleans, who is coming off a huge win against the Los Angeles Rams. The Falcons and the Panthers remain in the hunt. The way all three of those teams are playing right now, the Buccaneers will be the only ones staying home come playoff time.

A big reason that Tampa Bay has struggled so much lately is that their defense is atrocious. The Buccaneers have given up the fourth most yards per game in the league at 414.2 yards per game. On top of that, their opponents have been lighting up the scoreboard like a Christmas tree. The Buccaneers have given up 34.4 points per game, which is the worst in the NFL. Quarterbacks continue to torch the Tampa secondary to the tune of 307 yards per game. Again, this puts them in 30th. Their best quality has been stopping the run, and even then they are a middle-of-the-pack team at doing so. The Bucs sit in 15th in run defense at 107 yards per game.

Key to the Game

The winner of the turnover battle will win this one. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers simply do not force a lot of turnovers, with their -15 turnover ratio ranking dead last in the league. Smith does not make a lot of mistakes, having thrown just three picks on the season. With a makeshift line in front of him, if the pass rush can break through and make him uncomfortable in the pocket, Tampa Bay should come out with a few turnovers. On the flip side, Washington should play the pass aggressively, as Tampa Bay quarterbacks have thrown more interceptions (17) than any other team in the league.

Cover the Spread 365 Betting Trends

After getting demolished the previous week, the Washington Redskins have been a safe bet. They have gone 4-0 against the spread in games following a loss against the spread, a straight up loss, and a loss of at least 10 points. They’ve also covered in four of their last five when they had allowed at least 30 points the previous week.

While the Redskins are a safe bet, the Buccaneers are not. They have gone 2-9-1 in their last 12 against the spread when the defense had massive holes and allowed 150 or more rushing yards. Tampa has also dropped six of their last eight, along with a tie, in the games following a 30 point game. On top of that, they have dropped five of their last six against the spread overall, and come into this one with a four-game losing streak against the spread after a straight up loss.

FREE NFL PICK: Washington Redskins v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Washington Redskins should take this one. It will be interesting to see how a piss-poor offense missing a major part of its offensive line will fare against a defense that doesn’t play aggressively enough to force mistakes. Plus, all the trends, both in real life and in the gambling world, make this a safe pick.
