For this week’s Thursday Night Football matchup we have the playoff hunting Tennessee Titans hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars at Nissan Stadium.
After a strong 3-1 start, the Tennessee Titans have been unable to find any type of consistency from their offense or defense. Luckily, they are coming off of a much needed 26-22 victory over the Jets to keep their playoff hopes alive. The problems start at the QB position, where Marcus Mariota has been unable to solidify himself as a franchise QB. He has been much better over the past five weeks compared to the rest of the season with eight TD’s and just two INT’s, but the Titans still need more considering their lack of weapons. After losing TE Delanie Walker in week one for the entire season it was clear that the TItans were short on offensive talent and that has certainly hurt them this season as they average just 18.4 ppg (28th in NFL) and 310.2 ypg (28th in NFL). Their running game has been admirable with Dion Lewis and Derrick Henry creating a solid one-two punch, but it has been their defense that has allowed them to be at .500. This defense has been excellent against the pass allowing just 221.2 passing ypg (5th in NFL) with the help of a secondary that consists of Adoree’ Jackson, Kevin Byard and Malcolm Butler. Plus, when you combine that with linebackers Wesley Woodyard and Jayon Brown it isn’t surprising that they are holding teams to just 20.4 ppg (6th in NFL).
The Jacksonville Jaguars have been the most disappointing team in the NFL this season by far. If you follow the NFL you’d know that the biggest problem with the Jaguars is that their offense gives no support to their defense. It seems like that has doubled this season, with the Jaguars needing to go in a different direction at times with their starting QB, electing to go with Cody Kessler instead of Blake Bortles. One of the biggest reasons for their disappointments this season has been because of the absence of their workhorse running back Leonard Fournette. He’s had to deal with injuries and a suspension this season, so the Jaguars have had to go with T.J. Yeldon in that spot. That is clearly a downgrade, and not something you want when your team is already lacking offensive weapons with Fournette healthy. Now let’s get to the reason this team has actually won this season, the defense. The are led in tackles by the talented LB Telvin Smith, while Jalen Ramsey leads the team in INT’s with three. Overall, this defensive unit is one of the best in the entire league as they allow teams to score just 20.3 ppg (5th in NFL) while also holding them to 315.6 ypg (3rd in NFL).

This certainly isn’t the most exciting Thursday Night Football game we could have asked for, but it is two even teams, which should result in a very entertaining game. There are plenty of reasons to pick Titans as the favorites here, however, their offense is extremely inconsistent. Plus, after seeing the Jaguars defense strong showing last week against Andrew Luck and the Colts, expect Mariota to deal with the same.
