The Rams have been one of the surprising teams that nobody expected to do well. As it stands, the Rams control their own destiny for the #3 seed. However, if they lose, there are a couple scenarios that would drop them to the #4 seed. If the Panthers win, or both the Saints and Falcons win, then they would fall from the #3 to the #4 seed. Los Angeles is 4-1 in their last five games and have only lost one game in their division this season. Their latest win was a close 27-23 victory against the Tennessee Titans. Jared Goff made 22 of his 38 pass attempts for 301 yards and four touchdowns. He had no interceptions, but he had two fumbles and lost one. Although Todd Gurley didn’t get a touchdown on the ground, he still rushed for 118 yards in 22 carries and caught two touchdown passes. He also led the team in receiving, catching 10 passes for 158 yards. The next closest receiver to match Gurley’s totals was Cooper Kupp, who caught four passes for 65 yards with a TD pass. Sammy Watkins also caught a touchdown pass in the winning effort. Troy Hill had nine solo tackles on defense, but Corey Littleton was the MVP on defense during that game. Along with an interception, he also managed a sack and a tackle for a loss.
Although the 49ers currently have a .333 winning percentage this season, there is reason to be hopeful for the future of the 49ers and their fans. Although they were 0-9 to start the season, they have won five out of their last six games. Their most recent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars gave the fans in San Francisco optimism for next year. They were able to beat the #3 seed in the AFC by a score of 44-33. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was acquired from the Patriots mid-season, completed 21 of 30 passes for 242 yards with two TD’s and one interception. The rushing attack was strong, with three different players getting a rushing touchdown, including Garoppolo. Carlos Hyde got the majority of the carries with 21, but Matt Breida earned the most yards with 74 including one 30 yard run. Kyle Juszczyk was the primary receiver on Christams Eve for San Francisco, catching five passes for 76 yards. George Kittle and Trent Taylor were the recipients of Jimmy Garoppolo’s touchdown throws. On defense, Brock Coyle had eight total tackles while Soloman Thomas had one sack and 1.5 tackles for losses. Three different players caught an interception from Jacksonville’s QB Blake Bortles. Dontae Johnson even returned one pick 50 yards for a touchdown.

The 49ers are 4-1 with Jimmy Garoppolo starting and as a Patriots fan, I can’t help but to jump onto the Jimmy G bandwagon. This should be an interesting match-up because if the Rams win, they clinch the #3 seed in the NFC. On the other hand, the 49ers would show that they can beat even the best teams. When the two teams last faced each other, the Rams only won by two points in week 2. Granted, those were different circumstances and players have come and gone, but it shows that division games are always competitive. Although the Rams are more likely to win this game, I believe the game will be much closer than expected. The last time the 49ers lost by more than one point was in week 9 against the Cardinals, when C.J. Beathard was the QB at the time.
