The list of accolades for Tom Brady seem to continue to stack up as the New England Patriots continue their quest for a sixth title. He is in his 19th season and at 41 shows no signs of slowing up. Going into this Monday Night matchup against the Bills the Patriots come into the game sitting atop the AFC East standings on a four-game winning streak. Averaging 381.1 yards from scrimmage which is good for 9th in the NFL this offense is rolling. Brady has posted numbers of 260 yards per game aided by the running game which has improved from last year at 120.9 up from 118.1. This is a new offense for Brady with enhanced weapons at the wide receiver position. New England acquired Josh Gordon for a fifth round pick from the Cleveland Browns earlier in the season giving the team a dimension at wide out they have not seen since the departure of Randy Moss almost ten years ago. Rob Gronkowski though fighting through injuries has been a steady force for the Patriots averaging 15.6 yards per reception. He is nursing ankle and back issues this week but should be available. Josh Gordon has also been slowed by a nagging hamstring but should good to go come kickoff as well.
The biggest question through not only the season but years prior for New England has been their defense. Defensively they rank 25th in total defense giving up 389.9 yards per game from scrimmage. The departures of Malcolm Butler and Danny Shelton have shown in their ability to get off the field. Looking back to the Chiefs game in which Patrick Mahomes lit their defense up for 352 yards and two touchdowns, this is an indication of what the Patriots will be for the remainder of the season. An average defense backing up a juggernaut of an offense (when healthy) winning shootouts on their way to a division title. Though the Dolphins do represent somewhat of a threat their quarterback situation is too unstable to potentially dethrone the Patriots.
The Bills come into this contest last in the division after a heartbreaking loss to the Houston Texans, in which, Nathan Peterman was intercepted by Jonathon Joseph who returned it for a touchdown in the closing minutes of the ball game. The following week they were blown out by a depleted Colts roster. Many key players have been ruled out for this contest. Josh Allen, Taiwan Jones, and Trent Murphy have all been ruled out and Shady McCoy is questionable after participating in Saturday’s practice with a non-contact target jersey. The Bills come into this game 4th in total defense holding opponents to 320.9 yards per game from scrimmage and causing 20 fumbles so far this season.
As good as their defense has been in wins over the Minnesota Vikings and the Tennessee Titans, their offense has been the Achilles heel. Starting a rookie quarterback the Bills find themselves second to last in total offense posting just 234. In light of Josh Allen’s injury and the poor play of Nathan Peterman, Derek Anderson will make his second start against the Patriots and become the thirteenth Bills quarterback to face Bill Belichick. Anderson comes into this game with a 20-28 record as a starter and a 70.5 career passer rating. The Bills will need to rely heavily on Kelvin Benjamin in the passing game who is coming off a season high in receiving yards at 4 receptions and 71 yards against the Colts. Buffalo’s defense will need to have a great showing and put pressure on Brady early to stay in this game.

The Patriots come into this game as a well-offensive machine captained by probably the greatest quarterback of all time. The Bills offensively are on the other end of the spectrum. Horrendous offensive play has the Bills sitting at 2-5 and with the Patriots coming to town, likely another notch in the loss column. Gronkowski and Gordon will be in the lineup though nursing injuries respectively I expect them to have big games. The key to this matchup is how much pressure can this very good Bills defense get on Tom Brady. They cannot allow idle time in the pocket or the Patriots will pick them apart. Sony Michel has been ruled out and with Brett Burkhart already out the Patriots will not have much of running game so the pass rush will be ever important for this Bills defense. While this game is in Buffalo I expect the Super Bowl runners up to come out with the victory on Monday Night Football.
