NFL FUTURE WIN TOTALS OVER/UNDER BUFFALO BILLS

With NFL training camps only a few weeks away, it’s never too early to start researching for the 2017 season and looking into the odds. Vegas has taken no time off, as they have already released odds for each team, projecting the Buffalo Bills to win 6.5 games this season. That is one win less than last year, where they finished 7-9 in a tough AFC East division, dominated by the Super Bowl champion Patriots. Despite the Bills streaky stretch of wins and losses during the 2016 season, I wouldn’t rule them out as a contender for a double-digit win season in 2017. This team is exhilarated by young talent at each position and has a lot of room to grow and develop with new head coach Sean McDermott.

BUFFALO BILLS 6.5 WINS OVER/UNDER: OVER

The Bills finished 2016 with a 7-9 record but that doesn’t attest for how good they actually were. Their coaching struggles throughout the season concluded with the firing of Rex Ryan before the last game of the season. This year they look to build off their talent with new head coach, Sean McDermott. Although they will be jumping in the strength of schedule rankings, from tenth last year to fifth this year, the Bills look to win closer games this year. Last season, six of their nine losses were lost by one touchdown score or less. The ability to have turned around half those close losses, would’ve opened the Bills up to the playoff picture. The franchise is relying heavily on McDermott to make better decisions this year in close games.

As mentioned, the Bills do not lack talent and look to take advantage of this in 2017. Their productive offense, led by RB LeSean McCoy and a powerful O-line, is arguably the best rushing attack in the NFL. If speedy quarterback Tyrod Taylor can improve his passing game, this offense has a lot of potential. Taylor tied Dak Prescott of the Cowboys last season with most rushing touchdowns in the NFL. He also threw another 17 and finished the season with the tenth best ‘touchdown to interception’ ratio. Taylor will have a lot to live up to this year, as key losses to the defense will put pressure on him to score more. The Bills defense has been plagued by age, injuries, and now the loss of top two cornerbacks; Stephon Gilmore and Nickell Robey-Coleman. First round pick, Tre’Davious White, looks to fill some of that space, but will still need help covering the speedy divisional receivers. However, the remarkable leadership of 11-year veteran Kyle Williams will be a big help to this struggling defense, if he stays healthy. The off-season signings of talented safeties, Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, will give the Bills speed and agility in the backfield, but Williams and the line will need significant improvements in order to stop the powerful Patriots‘ and Dolphins‘ offenses in 2017.

Looking back at their 2016 season, their was a lot games that could’ve gone the other way and a lot of positives to be taken away from it. This team managed to shutout the Super Bowl champion Patriots in Foxborough, week 4, before being blown by them at home in week 8. Other rough losses came against a playoff Raiders team and the Jets in the final week of the season. Despite those losses, many games could’ve been won with better coaching. The Bills lost both season games to the Dolphins by a field goal score, and those five division losses really hurt their playoff hopes. McDermott looks to analyze and build off these losses, making sure the close ones don’t repeat themselves in 2017. This year the Bills have some tough road games against the Panthers, Falcons, and Bengals early in the season, but have a good chance of improving against divisional rivals.

I expect the Bills to win more than 7 or more games this season, and wouldn’t be surprised if they sneak into the playoff picture. Despite their tough schedule, I see them posting an 8-8 record. The Bills should also be in the hunt until the very end, playing their last three weeks against Dolphins twice and Patriots once. The offense has all the pieces in place for success with health, and as long as their defense can hold on to the games, they will pull away with hard-fought wins.
