NFL FUTURE WIN TOTALS OVER/UNDER INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

The NFL season is just months away and recently Vegas released their odds for every NFL team. Vegas expects The Colts to win 9 games this season, one more than last year. The Colts had an up and down 2016 NFL season. They ended the season 8-8 and missed the playoffs. The Colts could never get on a hot streak throughout the season. Because of this, they would alternate winning and losing each week. The main problem for the Colts was the inconsistency on offense and defense leaving the public wondering which team would show up on every Sunday. The Colts expect their new signings and draft picks to step up big in order to fill the holes in their defensive lineup.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS 9.0 WINS OVER/UNDER: UNDER

The Colts finished the season at an average 8-8 which was a surprise. They ranked 22nd in strength of schedule, so many people thought had an easy path to the playoffs. Also, with Andrew Luck, T.Y. Hilton, D’Qwell Jackson, and Frank Gore the Colts seemed destined to win the division. This, however, was not the case and a struggling Houston Texans team ended up winning the AFC South. The Colts were solid on offense, but their defense was one of the worst in the league. Because of this imbalance, they could never get hot and looked very poor throughout the season.

Last season, the Colts were horrible on defense ranking 30th in total defense. Only two teams ranked below them which were the Browns and 49ers who were the worst two teams in the league. The Colts did not rank well in any defensive category last season. They ranked 27th in passing defense, 25th in rushing defense, and 30th in receiving defense. In order to have a successful 2017 season and make the playoffs, the defense must improve tremendously. During free agency, the Colts focused on defense and added some solid players to their team. They signed Sean Spence, Barkevious Mingo, and Johnathan Hankins. They hope these players have an immediate impact and can help fill the holes in their defense.

In the draft, the Colts once again went for defense in the first two rounds. The main focus for them was their secondary, which had trouble covering the passing game. In the first round, Malik Hooker was selected. Hooker was a safety that played under Urban Myer at Ohio State. One of his most impressive stats was his 7 interceptions in 2016. If this can transfer to the pro level, the Colts are looking at someone who can get turnovers and give the ball back to the offense. Quincy Wilson, a cornerback from Florida, was taken in the 2nd round. He has speed and which allows him to cover ground, break up passes, and get interceptions. The Colts will be hoping these two rookies have great seasons and help improve their defense.

The Colts offense was once again solid this year. T.Y. Hilton had a stellar year leading the league in yards (1448). Andrew Luck also had a good season posting the 7th best total QBR in the league. The team also ranked top 10 in passing, downs, receiving, and total offense. The Colts were a passing team last year which meant that Frank Gore got fewer carries. Because of this, whenever teams shut down the passing game, the Colts had nowhere to go. In order to have more success this season, the offense must learn to be more dynamic and utilize the running and passing game. Kamar Aiken was signed during free agency to improve the passing game. The Colts expect him to be a huge threat in the red zone.

NFL FUTURE WIN TOTALS OVER/UNDER INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Outlook: I don’t think the Colts will get above 9 wins this season. I predict Luck and the offense will be top 10 once again and T.Y. Hilton will get over 1,000 yards. There are still major concerns on defense and there were no huge big name signings. We also don’t know how well the rookies will transition from college to the NFL. I expect the Colts to finish with 8 wins which could sneak them into the playoffs since their division is one of the weakest in the entire NFL.
