NFL FUTURE WIN TOTALS OVER/UNDER SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

The San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of a rebuild as they look to achieve the heights they reached in the late 80s and early 90s. After making the Super Bowl in 2013, the Niners have had a swift fall from the top. Now with a new coach, Mike Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch, the Niners look to make an improvement on the 2-14 year they had last season.

The two overarching weaknesses the Niners had last year was their run defense and pass offense. They ranked LAST in run defense and LAST in pass offense. Not to mention ranking LAST in total points allowed and 31st in total yards gained (second last).

In order to combat the defensive weakness, the Niners made a trade with the Bears acquiring the 3rd and the 31st pick. With those picks, the Niners chose Solomon Thomas, a defensive end from Stanford and Reuben Foster, a linebacker from Alabama. Both players dominated their respective conferences and have abilities that should translate easily to the speed of the NFL.

For the pass offense, the Niners signed free agent WR Pierre Garçon and quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley. With the 106th pick, the Niners also picked quarterback C.J. Beathard from the University of Iowa.

While the addition of Pierre Garçon is great as he is still in the midst of his prime, the addition of Brian Hoyer leaves much to be desired. Hoyer has played for five different teams in six seasons. He is a great quarterback if you want to go 4-12 or at best 6-10, he is not a quarterback for the future. Matt Barkley was once a highly touted quarterback at USC but since being picked in the fourth round in 2013 he has not shown much.

The quarterback is most important position in football and it is unclear what the Niners plan to do. Will they tank this year and chose a quarterback with a top 5 pick? Will they try and win games this year and hope to win a quarterback sweepstakes in free agency next year? Some of the decisions the organization has made show a direction towards improvement short-term but without a franchise quarterback, they are far from contention.

The Niners have an interesting schedule this year. They start the year at home against Carolina and then go to Arizona and Seattle in weeks two and four. In the first eight weeks, the Niners play at home three times. At the halfway point, I see the Niners at 1-7. To end the year, the Niners play; @ Bears, @ Texans, vs Titans, vs Jaguars and @ Rams. From those five games, I think they win two. That mean they are 3-13 – their over/under is 4.5 (the Cleveland Browns have the same o/u). That leaves the Niners a one game buffer that they could win.
