NFL FUTURE WIN TOTALS OVER/UNDER MIAMI DOLPHINS

During every NFL season we usually get one team that surprises everyone and exceeds expectations during the year. The Miami Dolphins were that team in 2016.  After starting off the year 1-4, the Dolphins looked like a team that were headed towards a top 10 draft pick with another season down the drain. That was until they went on to win nine of their last 11 games to finish 10-6 and make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Despite being eliminated from the playoffs in the Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2016 season should be considered a resounding success and step forward for a franchise that has been mulled in disappointment for years.

MIAMI DOLPHINS 7.5 WINS OVER/UNDER: OVER

Despite injuries to key players Reshad Jones and Ryan Tannehill, the Miami Dolphins won double digit games and made the playoffs for the first time in seven years. All this was done in the first year of new head coach Adam Gase, so it was definitely a successful one.  Year two under Gase is sure to be much more competitive, since the Dolphins have the sixth toughest schedule in the NFL next season. There are plenty of things to like about this squad, as well as a few things to improve on from last season.

The Dolphins made huge strides in key areas of their offense last season, such as, finding a star RB in Jay Ajayi and establishing a deep WR corps of Jarvis Landry, Devante Parker and Kenny Stills. Even QB Ryan Tannehill was in the middle of a career-year, where he had 13 touchdowns and five interceptions in his final eight starts before going down with a sprained ACL and MCL at the end of last season. Ajayi ran for over 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games in his first season as a starter and looks to take on an even bigger role next season. The trio of Landry, Parker and Stills combined for over 2,600 yards and 17 touchdowns last season and Miami was able to keep them all together after signing Stills to a 4-year extension this offseason. Lastly, the Dolphins have undergone a complete makeover at their tight end position with the signing of former-Dolphin Anthony Fasano and trading for Julius Thomas. Thomas and Fasano are practically two different TE, so it’ll be interesting to see how Gase uses them.

The defense for Miami was average throughout the year, but they faltered when it came to crunch time. Miami allowed the third most yards per game to running backs and were tied with the 49ers for avg yards per rush at 4.8.  With clear disadvantages on that side of the ball it was important for Miami to attack these holes during this offseason. I believe the Dolphins did exactly that with the signings of LB Lawrence Timmons, DE Andre Branch and Cameron Wake, drafting LB Raekwon McMillan and trading for DE William Hayes. All five of these players will be added to a rotation that will be much improved from last season. With Timmons, McMillan and Kiko Alonso at LB the Dolphins have finally found some stability at position that has really needed it. Also, it also helps that the Dolphins are rid of free agency bust Mario Williams.  Plus, with Reshad Jones back healthy for a full season expect bigger and better things for this defense.

The Miami Dolphins are going to be a better team next season, but will that matter because of the difficulty of the schedule? I think it will. The Dolphins brought back all of their core pieces, which will definitely add to the chemistry this team seemed to have built throughout last season. The injury to Tannehill late in the season definitely hurt because of the momentum the team was in, so it was hard to expect the Dolphins to win in Pittsburgh. I’m going to go with OVER 7.5 wins for the Miami Dolphins next season, with them just missing the playoffs at 9-7.
