The NFL kicks off on Saturday with an NFC Divisional matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles are home underdogs after losing their star QB Carson Wentz to a knee injury near the end of the regular season.

Atlanta is back in the playoffs and looking to make another run to the Super Bowl. The Falcons have changed their game plan from years past by focusing more on the run that the pass attack. They have established Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman as crucial parts of the offense early and often throughout the season and it has paid off. They are able to keep opposing offenses off the field by keeping the clock and chains moving. This game might be decided by Ryan’s arm however as the Eagles rank first in the league versus the run. With wide receivers like Jones, Gabriel and Sanu the thought of Ryan airing it out is not far fetched. If Atlanta can have some early success running the ball against the Eagles front seven then that will open the field for the receiving corps and the Eagles will be in big trouble.

Atlanta’s defense must come out and do what they do best which is rushing the passer. They know the the Eagles will come out trying to establish a running game then using that success with screens and play action passes. The Falcons need to be ready for whatever is thrown at them and expect Foles to come out with trickery in order to put them on their heels.

Losing Wentz was surely a huge blow to the Eagles after such an amazing run in the regular season but Nick Foles has led the offense well as his replacement. He will be put to the test on Saturday as the Falcons come out ready to put tons of pressure on him. Their best bet is to use their depth at running back to chip away at Atlanta’s offense. This will allow the Eagles to open up the field with play action passes to receivers like Agholor and Ertz. Foles needs to get the ball out quickly so Agholor in the slot will be a popular target in this game. They will be highly motivated as they are on top of their division and still underdogs at home. Philadelphia has a good record versus the Falcons as they have beaten them seven out of the last eight games at Lincoln Financial.

The Eagles defense is leading the league when it comes to stopping the rush. They are also fourth in the league in points allowed at 18.4. They need to stick to their game plan and stop Atlanta’s ground game and keep it a low scoring affair. The Eagles know that the Falcons are 0-6 when failing to score 20 or more points so you can be sure that they will be fired up to keep their streak as a league leading defense.

Atlanta may have a mental barrier traveling to Philadelphia as they rarely have success there. History will not repeat itself in this one though. Atlanta is sure to have a solid strategy on how to attack the Eagles defense and a little success early will only create more and more opportunities as the game progresses. Atlanta has too many weapons and is desperate to get back to the Super Bowl after the brutal loss they took last time. This is just a stepping stone and the Falcon’s will move on to the next round.
